Gov't drops defense of anti-gay marriage law - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110223/ap_on_re_us/us_gay_marriage - broken link)

Looks like our President has finally grown a pair.

Obama is helping to reverse the damage that gutless President Clintoon did in 1996.

otoh, if Clinton had not signed it, perhaps the congress would have pushed for a Constit Amendment to bar marriage equality, which would have been harder to overturn at a later time.
The idea of marriage equality was a very unpopular idea at the time, and most likely would have passed, even with the huge hurdles that an amendment to the Const entails.

About time. Amazing that something so blatantly discriminatory and unconstitutional was ever passed; much less that it has remained the law of the land for so long. Of course it still takes Congress to overturn it entirely but, at least a good start.

Oh yeah, that rule-of-law president (only when it suit you) has ruled DOMA unconstitutional - I though courts were supposed to do that.

More likely, obama sees his coalition crumbling around him and is trying to shore up segments.

He's obeying the rule of law by not supporting this piece of fundamentalist fascist tripe.

It is indefensible.

And watch it work, too.

Reps need to find someone to step up pretty soon.

Witholding supportlegal ruling. Courts are indeed supposed to do that, they currently do and will continue to do so. I don't see how you can be confused by this clear distinction of the roles of our branches of government.

It's blatantly unconstitutional. It was pretty idiotic to defend it in the first place.
