The first amendment has NOTHING to do with unionizing. "Assemble" means meeting privately or publicly to discuss issues without being pressured by govt to disperse.

Just curious as to where everyone stands and why. I personally am against all unionization, but I have seen plenty of people who are adamantly against public unions but think private sector unions serve a great purpose.
I was against unions also, when I worked for a very small family run business. When I started working for a large corporation, I quickly realized why, as employees, we definitely needed the right to collective bargain. These huge corporations don't honestly give much thought or care to their employees, except when they are forced to. The upper crust of management is interested in pleasing stockholders in order to make sure their own pay and bonuses keep rising.
Consider this also: in southern IL, there are several large coal mines that have opened recently that are non-union, yet treat their employees fairly well with comparable pay and good benefits. This is done to keep the employees somewhat happy so as to keep the unions out. Therefore, if the unions didn't exist, they would have no motive to do this. (and I am generally a conservative independent, by the way)

Too true! andrea has given us many lessons in how to negotiate, and if we don't get the results we want, we're supposed to quit. If we can't find anyone to hire us at a higher pay scale, better benefits, etc, then we aren't good at what we do. I do believe she told me i was a bad nurse.

Andrea has a very narrow view of the situation. She parrots the party line with cute anicdotes. I worked as an exempt employee in an organization for many years. Decades, really. I was responsible for the P&L statement for my region. We would EBIT(earnings before taxes) at 12% growth and senior management would hold me to a 1.5% raise for my workers. In the union shops that were attached to us they would get 4.5%.
EVERYONE uses government services - EVERYONE. Public schools that you don't use are used by kids that grow into workers who keep the roads you DO use in shape, they grow into workers who serve in the military who keep YOU safe, they grow into port workers who keep goods that YOU buy flowing into the country, into policemen who put bad guys in jail so that YOU don't get robbed by them, into electricians & engineers who keep YOUR power on (none of which would happen without an educated workforce) - so it really doesn't matter whether or not YOUR kids went to public school or not, you STILL received a benefit from public schools.
EVERYONE in the country benefits from an educated workforce - EVERYONE. That's why every modern country PROVIDES an education for it's populace - not JUST those who can afford to pay for one.
And if YOU - like TKramar - insist on making the silly claim that somehow you don't have to pay taxes because you never use any government services - then YES you are a leech.

The biggest part of your wage increases through unions is right into the hands of the union officials. And there's no reason for you to be overpaid, just so they can do nothing and get rich off of you.

When I retired my union dues were around $800 per year.
Non-union scab lobs in the railroad industry were about 20% less than mine with NO insurance.........I'll gladly pay that pittance for the returns

I'd work twice as hard as I do now, for half the pay.

Once upon a time, I worked in a field that wasn't unionized. Then I came to work for a company that is. The difference has been like night and day, mostly because unions are the only real way employees have of dealing with management. Open up a history book (assuming there are still people who read actual books any more) and you'll find that this was the reason unions formed in the first place.
If you're so religiously opposed to unions, fine. But don't take it out on people who've chosen to stand up for themselves.
