Are you self employed? You don't get a refund for social security payments that are deducted from your pay... if you're an employee. If you're self employed, you pay more into SS than if you're an employee. You didn't really supply enough info, but a single person making 30k isn't considered 'poor'.

As stated the Op isn't poor. 10% in taxes is low really.

There are not a lot of deductions that a single person making $30,000 a year can use, especially not $7,100 worth.

Standard deduction of $7,100, Exemption of $3,650 leaving a taxable income of $19,250.

The first $8,375 is taxed at 10% or $837 in tax

The remaining amount is taxed at 15% or $1,632 in tax.

$2,469 in tax minus the $400 making work pay credit is $2,069.

IMO, the OP is not self-employed.

He could not have used a 1040EZ and someone took withholding.

I am self employed and do not pay SS.

I wish i WAS self employed. I hate working for someone else. Also, I'm not complaining that I had to pay taxes. I'm just saying that the fact that the bottom fifty percent DON"T pay is a MYTH

But, when I asked the OP said the $30,000 was gross.

I agree.

When you work for others you just make money for them.
