Gotta be Teddy. He was a naturalist, and his idea for the park systems was a crucial aspect to preserving our countryside, and he was a trustbuster. Believed in freedom, but also helping the underdog.

And while he may have been a bit of a war hawk, at least he wasn't a chickenhawk. The charge on San Juan Hill was underrated as far as war heroics are concerned.

Also one of the most intelligent US presidents ever.

I think he had a good understanding of both war and peace. But yes, I guess he was a war hawk at times. I liked his life so much, I guess I leave that part out
I find that whole early 1900 era of America so
fascinating.

Yep, it took over 100 years to give him the medal
of honor for it.

The reality is that politics is so divided and nasty today that many of those "old" candidates we admire would likely NOT run. Eisenhower would have never run - he would have been afraid of the rumors (which proved to be true) about Kate Summersby (his mistress during the war). Same thing for JFK and maybe Bill Clinton. I've been voting in Presidential elections since the '60's and never seen such division (and partisan dumpster diving) ...... even during the Civil Rights years.

Well, if a Ouija Board would work it would be Harry Truman or Ronald Reagan. Outside of that all I see are leftovers, neo-cons, and a current economic socialist.

Gerald R. Ford---he really worked hard for the people he represented and once elections were over he knew how to work across the aisle and get things done. He had class, a great work ethic, and values not found in many politicians today. I met him in person a dozen or so times when I was a teenager, too young to really appreciate the specialness of the experience at the time.

Ditto. I'd add Theodore Roosevelt, for the same reasons as so many other posters. That kind of Republican has gone the way of the dodo bird.

Eisenhower, and TR definitely. I also probably would have voted for Nixon in 1960. Other Than FDR and Truman I think Rs were much better then Ds from 1860-1964.
