Able-bodied people don't get it. It's not like we're getting these accommodations but have the same abilities as them. That's why it's called being disabled. The accommodations are there to try to minimize the disability, but the disability is still there. I don't understand what they're jealous of--because the thing they're "jealous" of isn't even real--getting a "free ride". Having a shorter distance of travel isn't a "free ride" when you have debilitating condition. They seem to forget that whole part of the picture--you know, the fact that "disabled" means actually living with a condition that limits one's ability to participate in many major life activities.
I really, really, really miss hiking, dancing, and gardening. I can't even sit and sew, anymore. I was a very active individual, at one time. I worked from the time I was 15. I always took care of myself. I loved traveling and working and fixing things around the house. I never asked anybody for help. It's been an eye opening experience, being disabled.

I still don't think of myself as disabled. I keep thinking one day I'll wake up and everything will go back to normal. It hasn't happened. I wish people would stop being so angry. I'm angry. I don't know what they're angry about. I'd trade places with somebody with a good spine and money in the blink of an eye.

I know there are people out there who abuse the system, but they come from all walks of life; rich and poor alike. And, I think it was you who made the point that there are some who might be using a disabled persons's car at the store and park in the handicapped zone. I guess that happens. But, that doesn't mean there aren't real handicapped people out there.

Anyway, I really like your attitude, nimchimpsky. You are a calm presence around here.

That's what it really boils down to. Every able-bodied person who envies disabled people for using the handicap spot could end up being the person needing it tomorrow. Anyone can become disabled tomorrow. My guess is that they're projecting their own fears about possibly becoming disabled one day.

There are a minority of people who abuse the system but really it's not worth giving every disabled person the stink-eye over the minority of abusers. After all, most people who have a handicap sticker need it.

Couldn't imagine his health condition but I guess you can get a 'handicap parking' tag for any dumb excuse reason. He probably wanted one because the parking spaces are double wide and his Vette wouldn't get door dings.
Apparently having an inadequate-sized male organ now qualifies for a handicap placard...

The OP has proven that he could be a prime candidate for being the poster child of the "A Mind is a Terrible Waste" campaign.

Maybe every morbidly obese person can trade spots with someone starving in Ethiopia or Somalia for a month ( without a scooter or public assistance) for a reality check.

Sounds like a win win situation. There's a reason why gluttony and laziness (slothfulness) was considered to be a sin in many cultures of the past.

BTW no one in the 3rd world cries about their handicaps. ( real and imagined) They deal with it.

No one begrudges the elderly and infirmed, most of these other people have dubious or self inflicted handicaps. Obesity NEVER helps a physical condition it only exacerbates it.

That's why most people don't feel sorry for habitual smokers with lung cancer or alcoholics with chirrosis of the liver. They did it to themselves, ignored everyone's advice( including their doctor's) and medical science.

And you know that NO ONE in the 3rd world complains??? How is that? You must be a very well travelled individual. Do you work with some world organization where you collect such information?

The elderly and infirmed have dubious or self inflicted handicaps?? PMSL. Please remember that when you are eligble for the elderly category (trust me it will happen to you if you live long enough, and your parents as well) and you suffer from aches and pains, bone fractures, arthritis or any other ailment that comes along with aging. Self inflicted. That goes to the top of the dumb-dumb list.

All people who suffer from obesity did it to themselves? Again, how do you know? Have you actually interviewed everyone who suffers from obesity? Did any of them tell you that it's a medical condition? Or they suffer from emotional or mental depression? Did any of them tell you that they were on cortisone?
If someone is on cortisone and doesn't eat for 2 days they can still gain weight. Weight gain is a side effect of cortisone. I think more than half of society is on some form of medication for depression, which can cause weight gain.

Please stop with the cortisone BS. What percentage of the mobidly obese can blame their problems on cortisone ?

Your reply goes to the top of your"dumb dumb list" (as you put it).

BTW my parents are in great shape, especially my dad who's in his 80's. And what you so conveiniently left out is that if you don't watch your weight and health when you are younger it will be MUCH worse when you are older.

AND obesity increases most all other health risks and conditions( something you seem to ignore). Let's see your stats on the cortisone excuse?

This country has more and more pansies that blame everyone and everything else for their problems.

And yes those in the 3rd world AND Americans a few generations ago manned up and dealt with their issues instead of making excuses for it.

My father in law lost his leg in WWII. He never uses his handicap to park there his choice but I have seen him berate folks who park in handicap spots who do what the OP says. It is funny to watch. He doesn't take any crap. One guy he got all over so bad he moved his car. It's obvious many use these things who may have family members with the disability but when they go to the store or wherever it's like hey I got a sticker I'm parking here. Sad actually. If your so friggen lazy you can't walk twenty extra feet your car should be towed and impounded.

I could care less who parks there. No one begrudges people actually handicapped.

If you were giving away free grub you would see many of the too obese to walk actually get up and run for it.
