Bill Maher is great on HBO, wish I had that channel, but only for his show. I think you should throw sports fans into the mix of people who go crazy over the dumbest damn things.
I'll agree that nothing fazes him, comedians are usually pretty good at that.
I saw the debate he had with Anne Coulter here in Boston and whenever he was losing ground he would just tell a joke about religion and he would recover (Anne is religious). He is actually a lot different one on one in that type of forum, I can't stand the way he runs Real Time but I liked him in the debate with Coulter he seemed a lot more likeable and had a lighter touch.
Would you believe me if I told you that he considers Anne Coulter a good friend?
I have heard Maher refer to Coulter as his "good friend" many times on his show.
I personally can't stand the woman, much like some on this forum can't stand Maher...
Give it a rest. Bet Oprah and Ellen donate more in a year than most can or will in a lifetime. The stuff given on the shows are from sponsers who give the goods free in order to get airtime and not to be sent to a shelter.
I find it a little hard to listen to someone rant about materialism who rakes in millions themselves.
You missed the point. People are going ape-**** crazy about material "things." Didn't you watch the video?
I wonder how many people including Bill Maher would not be happy to get all of these items. I think if someone was to give you these things right now, you wouldn't say no to them.
I am a fan. Bill Maher's a lot of things, but I don't think fake is one of them. He is what he is. Don't like him? Don't watch his show.
Fake, IMO, would be the typical televangelist who doesn't believe in a word of what he/she is preaching, but blathers the same nonsense over and over again to rake in the bucks from their gullible telecongregations.
Exactly! We would be surprised at how many are actually out there.

Pastors who have lost their faith. And these two men, who have built their careers and lives around faith, say they now feel trapped, living a lie.
"I spent the majority of my life believing and pursuing this religious faith, Christianity," Jack said. "And to get to this point in my life, I just don't feel like I believe anymore."

You obviously like Maher because he trashes Christianity.
Maher is an entertainer trying to make lots of money. Yes, he's fake, but that's what sells. He's good at it.
Don't kill the messenger! The unadulterated idiots are those who jump up and down and scream over material things. Material things are really meaningless as long as one has enough food, a roof over their heads, and clothing.
And yes, he most certainly questioned why Oprah would give away milliions of dollars of gifts and have folks swooning over what he labels as "greed." He even went so far as to compare their "swooning" to that of the religious fervor that some people exhibit in their churches.
The entire clip was based on Oprah giving away expensive goodies - and people's responses to receiving the largesse - especially during a religious holiday season.
Maybe you should watch the clip again, and learn how to analyze what you see and hear.
And you still didn't answer my question. Maher is so big on criticizing "the worship of greed" and how people "worship" things . . . how much does he make and what does he do with his money? What "things" does he own? And what altruistic gestures does he make?
I have watched and my analysis differs from yours. The clip started with the audience's orgasmic response to Oprah's giveaways, which I have always found a bit disturbing, but the clip was not about Oprah. It was about the over the top obsession with 'things', that so many Americans exhibit - particularly around the Christmas season.
Keep in mind that unlike Oprah, Maher has never presented himself as a spiritual leader or used his show to encourage others to inspect their inner selves to become better people. One would not expect him to be a paragon of charitable causes.
