You obviously like Maher because he trashes Christianity.
Maher is an entertainer trying to make lots of money. Yes, he's fake, but that's what sells. He's good at it.
Maher is anything but a fake. He lost his show on a major network because he spoke what he believes. He is very intelligent, however, he does speak the truth and often "strikes a chord" with many people who then respond with anger.
Thanks! I am ultra-conservative but with skin of leather, so-to-speak so I think I'll give Maher a few more of my minutes. He couldn't offend me if he tried. Others have, and utterly failed.
Actually, He does make a lot of sense. He seems to get a little overboard on his being agnostic but he has a wry sense of humor and will poke fun at hypocrisy anywhere he sees it. If i need a laugh a few of his clips on youtube will usually do it.
Maher is one of the most sanctimonious people on television. His whole shtick is to put people down and act like butter doesn't melt in his own mouth. He's very good at what he does, and he knows his audience, but he's as pompus and barf-able as the rest of them.
You both need to take that up with him. He's the one saying he is a Libertarian.

Many comedians say nearly racist or stereotypical things and people just laugh. Richards was bombing and decided to go crazy and throw n-bombs all over the place. It wasn't funny. I like Bill Maher even though he says some stereotypical things because he is funny. Same with Jon Stewart and same with some TV shows, especially Family Guy, which even though it took me a while to like that show, it is hilarious, especially the stereotypical stuff. But my feelings aren't easily hurt by anyone, especially not comedians. I will boo them though if they aren't funny.

But do you think that "materialism" has become the "religion" of many people?

Do I think people worship "things"? Absolutely.
And I think Maher worships himself.
His thing is to put down Christians. So he mixes in a tape of Pentacostals and Oprah's audience. How much more clever would it have been for him (or his paid writers) to cut out the Pentacostals and just write something wry and witty about Oprah and her I Got A Free Blender! audience. No. he takes the cheap route and compares the people he hates with Oprah's gift show.
I am not purporting to know what Maher does with his money. Just saying . . . if he is so big on talking the talk and criticizing others . . .he should be willing to walk the walk and give us all an example of his altruism.
You may have to wait a long long time to see that happen.
... I think you should throw sports fans into the mix of people who go crazy over the dumbest damn things.
There is nothing wrong with "going crazy over the dumbest damn things". Life is enhanced by have a passion for something... anything. Life without excitement is boring.
And what you get excited about is your choice...one object is no better than another. One person might get excited about visiting the Louvre, another person prefers a strip joint. That's OK. One is not better than the other.
