Are there 111 black firefighters qualified to do the job? We can't lower standards just to hire black firefighters.
There were NO standards lowered. Why aren't you people reading or better yet doing your own research. The entire crux of the case is the fact that the City requirement stated one thing and they did something completely different.
I think this quota, like school admissions, is a set benchmark that is half-promising. A 65 is passing and that is the score to be qualified. However, it is the bare minimum, and a low one at that. It's just like applying to colleges.
And something else to consider: The article didn't say anything about Chicago firefighter department based their decision on the applicants' known or presume stamina and other physical attributes. With firefighters, I don't think you can always get the best candidates based on what they scored on a written or fill in bubble test. Did it say that everyone who scored an 89 or above were hired? If the the cut-off was at 89 and then they randomly chosed applicants from the top 1,800, then that must mean there were other qualifications that applicants had to meet. Rest assure not everyone who scored an 89 or above made it in.

You agreed with a LIE just because it was ignorant. Figures. These applicants PASSED the test as outlined in the requirments. Show me anywhere in the article where it was stated these applicants failed.
QUALIFIED does not mean AUTOMATICALLY HIRED.
What if there were 200 QUALIFIED applicants and only 100 positions? Do we just hire them all no matter what? Of course not. That's why hiring the best of the best is the accepted standard in hiring.
I didn't say that. My originally question wasn't answered and this story to me is extremely incomplete. Did the written test come first, then the endurance? Was the written test used to pass the higher score applicants off to the endurance portion? What weight did the test have against the endurance. I don't dispute the highest scores, my issue is the change of the rules when it appeared that these applicants qualified. What happened next?
Reading comprehension, try it. Where in the article or the complaint or the ruling did it state anything about AFFIRMATIVE ACTION?
Spin this any way you want. Blacks are being given jobs ahead of more qualified candidates because they're black. Blacks are being awarded damages because candidates were hired that were better qualified than them. Why are the blacks being awarded damages? Because they're black. End of story.....
