Yet, based on some of the comments here, that would seem to be a bit much to hope for.
You do see them talking as if Medicare were the whole expenditure of the Federal government, just as I do. However, some of them will never get beyond the use of ideologue speak I fear.

Well, we could always opt for the Dem's proposal.......oh wait, there isn't one. They prefer to go with the "head in the the sand" approach, until it all goes to crap.

Its the second largest "deficit" program.

Now only if democrats believed in a purity test, lock stepped approach to implement on purely ideological grounds. You're correct though, we wouldn't have "Medicare". We would have something a lot better.

Last year's budget was so bad, the Senate said "no way". This year, they didn't even want to vote on it. Do I have the right? I do get confused with all the games this administration is playing.

Many Republicans, many on this board in fact, can not settle on the fact that Americans like social security and medicare.

Ryans plan would cut both, and allow opt outs, etc. Its a good starting point for a compromise. But this is generally the Republican motto. Allow private investment outside of social security, if not end it. Allow for private options of medicare, if you can find any. And increase military spending. All the while, hardly, if ever, raise taxes.

Democrats just spend and spend and spend, without raising taxes, and without cutting programs.

There are realistic cuts and changes to the medicare and social security programs. We should cut defense, instead of increase it, and taxes are simply going to have to be raised, probably on everyone, to pay down our national debt.

Thats the hard truth, and Ryan's plan lays out some hard truths. But where its politically a problem is that they seem to think that if they keep telling people that privatizing social security and medicare are good options, and the real truth is 70% of Americans support those programs EXACTLY the way they appear today.

I'm not saying that we should leave well enough alone, because they are hardly well enough, but the cuts and changes he proposes simply are supported by Americans.
One question. Can you tell me how we keep Medicare exactly where it is with the $50 billion per year in reductions in it that will be with us the day that Obamacare kicks in? That 70% of people you talk about won't understand what has to happen to Medicare that first year with the $50 billion cut. Surely they will understand better the second year when another $50 billion is cut and in successive years the same thing.

Right. And in order to borrow MORE, it must be raised. Otherwise, we are forced to live within our means.

The Constitution says that the House is to propose budgets and that would have to be Dirty Harry's excuse for not wanting a budget. He did say that he thought we had been getting along famously without budgets to hold spending down. Maybe that is some of why you can't find his budgets.

When does the Senate Budget Committee report its form of the annual budget? I read in your Wiki article that is supposed to do that but Harry Reid doesn't believe in that kind of thing.

There is a plus side to Ryan's Folly repeated. It improves the chances of the Dems retaking the House.
