There are more ways of bullying now a day that being a child is getting harder and harder. Growing up without the internet was great, however, we now have it and it needs to be addressed.
You tube showing children getting beaten up those items should be taken down and if the posters (if associated with the bullying) are found they can be penalized by a fine or family. This is an actual crime once we think of it guilt by association. They are permanent records unless we take down those websites. Same thing goes for anything posted on face book or twitter talking about bodily harm to someone-aka telling a child to hurt themselves-even though the child should not do it and not listen to the posters it is something in writing and can be deemed a threat to that child therefore if adult situation legal matters can entail.
Turning off the computer is not the way of handling this and ignoring the problem infect putting your head in the sand will not make the problem go away it just prolongs it. There should be a watch dog system for teens to turn in anything they see on the internet anonymously that can do bodily harm. We have systems in place for adults like this it is called the police and 911.
As for name calling-bullying this is freedom of speech just remembers the old adage what comes around goes around.
Physical bullying needs to stop and the accidents when they happen need to stop schools are getting so much scrutiny that it is hard for teachers to teach instead of worrying about children’s' mental health.
You do realize right that sometimes much of this online bullying is done anonymously? Kids set up fake websites, facebook pages, and personas just to torment the object of their animosity. You are projecting the traditional face-to-face bulling that was once the dominant way to bully. That isn't the case nowadays. Please educate yourself."
Turn the gdam puter off!!!!!!!! What is wrong with you?? Why can't you understand that? Can you not survive if you aren't texting or tweeting or facebooking? Let em do it anonymously. If you don't know they are doing who who gives a sheet???
Lord of the Flies doesn't apply to turning off ones computer so now I don't get how shipping your children off to an island has anything to do with it. Is there wireless on this island? LOL.
Wow. You really are clueless. Kids are often required to use the Internet as students: to do assignments, collaborate with other kids, etc. Unless a kid were to quite literally live on an island by herself, she would also have to come into contact with other kids who are using twitter, facebook, etc. You don't think that there would be talk about what people were saying online?
Part of me feels like you are just being a contrarian to be a contrarian. You can't seriously think that turning off the computer is the way to avoid being the object of cyberbullying. But then you also think that that I was literally advocating sending kids to an island, so I guess it's more than likely pure idiocy rather than just wanting to be a contrarian.

Very true, you can't be cyber bullied if your not online, children don't need to be constantly texting and socializing on facebook and when the need arises to be online parents need to monitor what they are doing, it's called good parenting.

I've got three kids and none of em have ever had an assignment that consisted of researching anything on facebook. You can't seriously think it's not a way to avoid it. I think your just too worried about what others say about you. My kids have much more confidence then to worry about what some twit says on facebook. I suggest YOU turn the damn PC off.

*LOL* Are you serious? Have I been complaining about being cyberbullied? Stop letting your assumptions inform your reading of what a post actually says.
And I never said that students have to use Facebook to do research, but I certainly know kids in various levels of schooling who have Facebook groups organized around different classes.
Once again. Educate yourself. There's lot of actual research out there about cyberbullying. It's a lot more complicated than your simplistic mantra of "Turn the damn PC off."
No it's not. Research? LOL. More money into the trash can. You just see a bully around every corner. Sad way to live being the victim all the time.
