False. The top 1% earned 16.9% of the income and paid 36.7% of the federal income tax revenue. That's over twice their fair share according to their share of the income. The top 5-10% ARE paying their fair share, but the bottom 90% are paying less than their fair share. In most cases MUCH, MUCH less than their fair share.

Politifacts says I am right: PolitiFact | Bernie Sanders, in viral speech, says top 1 percent earn more than 23 percent of U.S. income

Quote:
When we asked Sanders' office for a source, they pointed us to a study dated Aug. 5, 2009 by University of California (Berkeley) economist Emmanuel Saez, "Striking it Richer: The Evolution of Top Incomes in the United States (update with 2007 estimates)." We looked at the paper and found this line: The top 1 percent "has gone through enormous fluctuations along the course of the twentieth century, from about 18 percent (of income) before WWI, to a peak to almost 24 percent in the late 1920s, to only about 9 percent during the 1960s-1970s, and back to almost 23.5 percent by 2007." An accompanying chart confirmed the 23.5 percent figure for 2007.

I couldn't help to notice the disdain you have for half the population considering them low-life dead-beat scum and claiming that they don't support themselves. Yes, they do. You are very disrespectful to your fellow citizens.

Well then Bernie is a liar and Politifact needs to change its name to The Propagandist.

You must be talking about China there, not the US. We need to do some housecleaning but China is starting to be in real trouble with ITS low wage jobs going to Vietnam and so on. Jobs are coming BACK to the US from China cause wages there are going up and fast.

We are being nickel-and-dimed to death by other countries who have cheaper labor. And the idea of retraining the American labor force into a high tech job labor pool is kind of a silly notion. Part of what made the U.S. so prosperous was that individuals with a relatively low scholastic aptitude could make a good living on an assembly line or in a steel mill. Now those same people are working in a Best Buy warehouse for 1/4 the pay.

Just focusing on the American economy, it would have been better to be born in 1940 when compared to 1990.
WW 2 helped Europe and Japan cause they had to REPLACE many things like railroads, factories, housing and so on. Had WW 2 NOT happened, I think those places would've been worse off dealing with old and broken down stuff in 2012.

God knows some things are falling to bits here but they're getting old.

That was 2007. In 2009 it was 16.9%. Source: IRS.

No, they don't. They're getting benefits and services they're NOT paying for.

Not at all. What's very disrespectful is to TAKE what other people pay for.

Nobody really cares about the country anymore--the ones who say they do are full of it. The people who could make a difference are just lining their own pockets. No one cares about the poor or the fact that their children will probably be poor as well. The American dream is dying, I agree. Now it's just how much can we fleece the average joe out of and how much can we line our own pockets with.

The ONLY thing that would bring this country back together, and I honestly believe this would be WWIII where the rich people would again actually need the average people again. For some reason human beings were wired this way. We are out for ourselves until something happens that allows us those brief periods where we can identify with others and work together as a team for a common goal. Otherwise it's just out for #1.

Shouldn't the poor start caring about themselves? Why have children if you know darn well you can't provide for them. Those receiving public assistance have a birth rate 3 times higher than those who don't. What kind of future are all those children going to have? They're born into poverty. Right off the bat there are overwhelming odds AGAINST them. Why would anyone do that to a child?

After Rome fell there was 1000 years of the Dark Ages. There is no guarantee of a Renaissance.
