There's a thread:

My AK-47 in New Hampshire would have stopped 9/11.

Do you yell "Live Free or Die" before you attack?

a good idea if they get a good return in the form of interest but i'd prefer any of my retirement funds "locked up' in good solid securities with a reasonable rate of return the closer to retirement you get so that interest compounding has a chance to kick in. Demographic profiles of your citizenry would probably show similar stats to ours ~ a boatload of boomers about to lunch on ss! Not a good time to have a bunch of that fund out visiting.

i'm a retired american that would like to spend 1/2 my time up there. Where you from? Any idea what sparrow lake is like now a days? My wife summered there every year as a kid. I'd also like to visit lake agnew, was there as a kid.

I'm in southern ontario and the sparrow lke I know of is on the trent/severn system and the second lake north of the big lake simcoe. Have been across it a bunch of times while touring the canal system. A nice area but ringed with cottages and developments now. Ontario is bigger than Texas with literally thousands of lakes dotting throughout. You could do far worse than pick a spot up here for the summer to hunt fish or otherwise enjoy your retirement.
C'mon up and set a spell.

It's a fact that our bloated defense budget in real dollars is twice than that of the Eisenhower admin, which was engaged in a brutal Cold War with the russians. Before the gov't cuts the social benefits that we are forced to pay for, the gov't needs to not spare the defense budget for reduction, not even think of eliminating capital gains tax and come clean on what type of deductions that they wish to eliminate from federal income taxes.
Noted.

Thanks, Sparrow is a ways up from Toronto... She stayed at wild echo lodge. There were several lodges and resorts even then, early 50's.

Agnew was 2/3 the way around lake huron about 25 miles north of main hiway. Great fishing, we camped at a landing in the middle of nowhere for days. Some guy in a beautiful Lyman came by to collect "rent" a couple of times, I guess there was a fly in resort on an island. I find it on Google earth and see the landing but even they are seeing cottages dotted all around the shore.

Well, I'm a Old Fart of 78 that spent $17,648 last year on my and the wife's Medicare Premiums (deducted from our Social Security Checks}, Supplemental Medical Insurance (Medicare ain't gonna cover everything ya know), Co-pays (A necessary part of affordable Supplemental Coverage). The $17,648 exceeded 7.5 % of my adjusted gross income therefore giving me a credit on my Federal Income Tax return.

DH and I started paying SS when we started working at 16. DH paid the max from 16 until he was 73. He once did a study for his employer that indicated folks my moms age got far more than they paid, people his age and situation will just about break even, the younger folks will get screwed.

Remember most old poops have grandkids and kids to be concerned about. I don't want anybody's kids paying my living expenses. If you want to really get pissed, start looking at payments to nursing homes for seniors. My mom lived with us while she was dying. Medicare provided medication, a nurse once a week to check on her. They wanted to send her to a facility. We refused. There is a ton of money being wasted on nursing homes and a bunch of rich folks on Medicaid.

Another note. Seniors are advised to get most of their funds out of the stock market and into something more stable when they retire. Many had money in bank CD's, etc. While some of you gripe about having to pay our Medicare and SS, remember that we are not making enough money off of a jumbo CD to buy a good hamburger. We don't see that changing in our lifetimes. It used to be common to get 3.5 or 4 %. No more.

Enjoy your low interest mortgage and car payments.

Without having read every post in this thread, are you saying your parents would NOT take social security benefits that they paid for during their entire working lives?

If not, they probably should have taken an IQ test before they bred.

You can't tell people that. They are convinced Medicare is free.
