Please understand - I think the maximum penalty of 20 years is crazy. I also think the 5 years that she got is probably too much (but, remember, she was convicted of 16 counts).
I think it should only be a low-level felony or even a misdemeanor if the student is otherwise of legal age to consent. But, yes, I do think it should be a crime.

And that's where I disagree.
I don't think it should be a crime period to have consensual sex with an adult.
No matter what the job position or extenuating circumstances.
If it's a teacher boinking a student, the only repercussion should come from her job and her personal life. That's it. It's a waste of time and effort to prosecute that.

I guess we have to keep in mind that we're talking about Texas, which argued even in the year 2003 that laws against oral and anal sex were a good thing.
