This is a great article from NPR talking about poverty in America but what really struck me was the map of where poverty is located. Republican states, especially southern states, are just the worst in the country when it comes to providing a decent living for their citizens yet Republicans always try to pretend their policies result in less poverty. Why is it Republican dominated states are such poverty ridden crapholes?

Count down to LWNJs playing the race card in 3...2....

Read your history for the answers; it's fairly simple. The North had the legacy of Franklin and Edison, industrialization and engineering, while the South had the legacy of Jefferson and Calhoun, agrarianism and slavery. The former proved to be a better generator of wealth.

There is a new divide now, however, namely private enterprise vs. gov't. Texas vs. California.
California Poverty Rate Highest In Nation Based On New Census Department Figures

It will take time, but eventually it will become clear that this is a much bigger divide than South vs. North.

I live in the south and I travel to the north.. I've been to Camden NJ, Philly, Detroit, I've been in the projects of Baltimore after sundown.. I will take the south every time... Northeners are real big about denouncing the south in order to fit their own agenda. Northerners have been doing it for over a century. The lower cost of living is NEVER put into the equation.. We in the south don't want nor do we need your worldly expertise in matters financial.. We don't want or need your condescending attitude or your arrogance.. We can live without it just fine.

Your link is a complete lie and we've had half a dozen threads on this issue in the California forum. Just look at the poverty map as you can see almost a dozen red states have much, MUCH higher poverty rates than California.

What makes a place a craphole isn't economic poverty, but cultural and moral poverty. One can live a good, decent, dignified life in "poverty". Likewise, it's not that blacks in the South or anywhere else are economically poor, but that 70+ percent of black children are born out wedlock, and that the greater part of black culture in this country is violent and dysfunctional. Those behaviors cause poverty, but are not caused by poverty.

About Republican states: First, red states have little power to thwart federal programs which promote poverty-creating lifestyles. Many states are "red" precisely because they live cheek-to-jowl with the negative effects of destructive, liberal social policies imposed by the federal government. Second, members of those groups most severely afflicted by poverty are not any better off in blue states - it's just that southern red states have more of them.

It should not be considered racist to say this. There were once many safe, hard-working, black-majority communities in this country. Something went terribly wrong. We should look honestly and soberly at the problem. When cultures die, they don't generally revive by themselves. It takes an outside force to elevate them and sometimes to sustain them. That was as true of the barbarous pre-Christian Europeans as it is for other groups today.

Camden is a pocket of poverty but if you look at the map in the OP New Jersey has one of the lowest poverty rates in the country on the whole. FACT.

Your other wild claims are in New York and Pennsylvania. Look at the map and see how much lower the poverty rates are in those states vs just about the entire south.

As I said, I can live much less expensively in the south than you can in the north, so you are comparing apples and oranges.. Real Estate is less expensive, gasoline is less expensive, food is less expensive.. Virtually everything you can name is less expensive in the south.. Do we in the south have our problems? Of coarse we do, but I will guarantee you, there are far greater problems in the north and the north would do well to clean it's own house before it starts cleaning others.
