Its crazy that you would post this. When I was in school, this is how black boys hair, and the girls who didn't have straight perms would be described by non-black boys and girls. From middle school clear up to high school. Its a shame that this term is still being used by some to describe the hair texture of Black men and women. It's sickening actually.

One more thought: Life is too short and there is already enough pressure on everyone regardless of gender or race. I hope that black women learn how to just live their lives and wear their hair any way they want to. Leave politics to the politicians and just look the way you want to look.

See what light? People need to stop judging and get a life. Is it just as bad when white and other non black women pump their bodies full of botox, anti wrinkle chemicals, silicon and implants to look a certain way? People here are quick to point out the image of other's instead of realizing we as a country have a problem holding ALL women to high physical standards.

I'm a black women and I have a relaxer. So dang what and will continue because I dang want to. It doesn't make me any less black or proud of my skin color. People get a life on the bashing black woman trip and bash your own because there is plenty to bash in every culture.

Let me rephrase this for you.

1. I watched five minutes of the clip in the OP - all the women had different hair styles, but every single one of them looked lovely. Bright, intelligent, attractive women all.

2. I read something years ago that many black women do not exercise because of their hair. Many spend so much money on their hair, and sweat and body oils would damage their styles so they just did not work out. That would have ramifications related to body weight, overall health, even such things as body image and self esteem issues (particularly among teen girls).

3. I don't see it as much these days but I remember seeing some black women years ago with VERY intricate hairstyles. The one that really sticks in my mind was seeing a woman (maybe in her late 20's) with some kind of bird cage looking hairstyle. Hair all piled on top of her head and then slicked into four separate "bars to the cage". Each of the bars (slick strips of hair) were rounded above her head and then met to form the top of the cage about 2 feet above her head - can't explain it very well but it was very weird. I will never understand what she was thinking to do that.

4. A young black woman used to come into the building where I worked on a regular basis. She had long straight hair that she always tied back into a pony tail. One day she walked into the building and had short hair and I commented on her hair cut. She told me that she hadn't got it cut. Confused I looked at her and insisted that her hair looked shorter. She told me "Oh! I've got my hair in the bag!" She reached into her plastic grocery bag and pulled out her pony tail and layed it on the counter in front of me. I didn't know at that point just how many black women use hair extensions.

RE: guys. I like short hair on men, and think that both black and white men look way WAY more attractive with short hair. Personal preference.

1) I agree

2) True for some not for all

3) This is not a "typical" style. This person was most likely of lower socioeconomic status

4) MANY women including White women use hair extensions. Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, the Kardashians, and all most ANY white female celebrity that you could name uses or has used hair extensions/weaves/hair pieces.

Didn't Imus get fired for talking about nappy hair? Now they're bragging about it.

Oh, the double standard!

It aint personal. Don't make it so.

All I'm saying is that black women shouldn't have to feel the need to go the chemical route. If you want to anyway, then do you. No skin off my back.

Its not really a judgement. Its simply the truth that chemical relaxers are profoundly damaging. If anything, women are bashing themselves when they engage in any form of self-torture. Putting a highly toxic chemical on one's head that can literally burn the scalp is self-torture. Those chemicals can eat away an aluminum can. Why would anyone continue using those chemicals when they are clearly destructive, and just painful. Discontinuing the use of those toxic chemicals is getting a life. A healthier one.
