But when more than 600 out of every 1,000 children born to women in their early 20s have single mothers, can anybody come up with a percentage for how many of them will flourish?
The article says:
Quote:
more than 600 out of every 1,000 children born to women in their early 20s are unmarried.
not:
Quote:
more than 600 out of every 1,000 children born to women in their early 20s have single mothers
if 42% of those unmarried mothers are single mothers (as a previous link I linked said that 58% of unmarried mothers are cohabiting), the the figure is more like 240 single mothers per 1000 born to women in their early 20s.
It was reported the other day on an inside page of the Pioneer Press
Could someone find that Pioneer Press article?
Btw every single mother I know works and there is a father somewhere in the picture - the average age is about late 20s. Also, I know others who have become single mothers in their late 30s onwards (they've wanted children but given up on finding a husband).

A single mother cohabitating with a boyfriend who isn't the child's father doesn't adequately provide that kid with one, and it in practice usually doesn't get reported to the government so the welfare (WIC, food stamps, section 8, TANF, etc.) keeps flowing.
I get that you're Australian and haven't seen what goes on in this country, but there are some parts of it where that sort of thing is very common.
