In all honesty, I think of unchecked rampant crime throughout many areas on the South and West side of town, massive political corruption and frigid temps and lots of snow during the winter.
The University of Chicago econ department: Frank Knight, George Stigler, Milton Friedman, Gary Becker--all ultra-right/libertarian.
And Donald McCloskey, later Deirdre McCloskey, the best teacher I ever had (when I was in school he was Donald). He had a severe speech impediment where he would get stuck on one syllable, and repeat it a few times. Then when he finally got unstuck, all the following syllables would come streaming out. Kind of akin to stuttering , but precisely the same. I never forget the first day in one of his classes a female b-school student audibly gasped when he got stuck, but we all soon learned that he was an amazing teacher. I think of a community organizer the future President who searched for an emotional hot-button to stir the pot and keep his community engaged. The only difference between the President in 2013 and the community organizer of twenty years ago is that today he is on the inside and he doesn’t know what to do now that he is there!
Not good things. I am the only gay liberal person I know who just can't stand that place. Even if I was offered a six digit income by an employer I would have reservations about moving there. lol.
I think:
Freezing cold
No parking
Expensive rent
Old buildings and utilities everywhere
Crime
Rude people (I don't know why Chicagoans get this rep that they are kind and welcoming people. They have all the rude traits about them that New Yorkers do. At least the New Yorkers are honest about it).
Along with some things that others have mentioned, this tends to come to mind:
"It's a hundred and six miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses."
"Hit it."
