There aren't enough burger-flipping jobs to employ all the 11 million unemployed Americans. Do you really think there are 11 million unfilled jobs in America right now, even low-level ones? And the real level of unemployed is more like 20 million, given all those who have given up.

I disagree.
The socialist overhead makes the buying power of those low wages unacceptable.
As to hiring "undocumented" labor, that is just another example of business attempting to evade the socialist overhead imposed for hiring "legals".

You could end two problems with one move - abolish socialism and its overhead expenses.
It would end the advantage for hiring "illegals," while boosting the buying power of the wages earned by the bottom rung workers.

There used to be dignity in all work. Not anymore. On this forum if you don't sit in a burlap covered box all day typing on a computer you're a "grunt".
Might I suggest that you return to 1956 if it was so appealing.

"Return to 1956"

Anyone with a brain knows that 1956 was during the peak of this country's history.

Too bad we can't go back and head off the idiocy that we are living with now.

There are far more than that many illegals living here and working. There is some truth to what the politicians say when they justify massive illegal immigration and claim that we need to bring in many millions of illegals because Americans are too lazy to work.

They may be right but it's not good to have a large and growing idle class of Americans who do nothing but lay around all day or end up in prison because they don't want to work for that they want. Now all those illegals want legal status and then they too will be too good to work those grunt jobs. Young men need to work more than anyone or they get in trouble and end up in prison.

Well -- far fewer men in prison in 1956, far more fathers taking care of and raising their children -- you think it's good that so many men now end up wasting so much of themselves in prison?

For everyone but the independently wealthy and some gigalos, there is work or there is prison and of course there is doing nothing but letting others feed and support you. No pride in that.

Men are disappearing from the workforce - Jun. 19, 2013

In the 1950s, nearly every man in his prime working years was in the labor force, a category that includes both those who are employed and those actively applying for jobs. The "participation rate" for men ages 25 to 54 stood at 97.7% in early 1956, but drifted downward to a post-war record low of 88.4% at the end of 2012.

"The proportion of guys doing nothing has risen," said Gary Burtless, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.

The decline of men in the labor force has broad implications for families, taxpayers and the economy. Fewer employed men means more people on the dole and fewer taxpayers to contribute to the nation's economic growth.

not enough jobs + job/skill mismatch = what do you expect?

How, exactly, do you intend to whip those "idle class" Americans in shape, do tell?

I'd stop giving them handouts. Men now are becoming like birds at the bird feeder. Rather than go out and do what is natural, they just sit waiting for their handouts. No more pride left in them.
