To be more accurate, she was born in Haiti, but has lived in the US since she was 2. 2 years old. Now 19, still can't read, and can barely articulate a coherent thought.
I think our immigration process needs to be examined.
19 years ago the vast majority Haitians weren't immigrants, they were refugees fleeing a serious of coups and counter coups including a U.S. incursion. Many were illiterate and incapable of speaking anything other than Haitian creole. So, my initial shock over the Jeantel's inability to read cursive writing changed when I read that she was born in Haiti.

Yeah, but it doesn't take someone 17 years to learn to read and write.
Agreed. I think folks are taking things too literal. I think she heard the "squishing/squeaking" sounds that usually comes with tussling movement on wet grass. Not sure why this dude is nitpicking this point.
Because, He was basing his whole defense on making Trayvon out to be the one who confronted George.

She's been in the US since she was 2. She's gone through the 11th grade in US schools.
Why did she sign a statement that she couldn't read?
Not to be rude... But, this young woman is a product of public education, the same system Obama wants to prepare all children for college. Anyone see the complete disconnect?
And she will be a Senior in High School... No child left behind.

Because they're not supposed to be in the grass
