You sounded like Rachel Jeantel when I read your post, but to answer your question yes. If you do not know, the laws work the same if you are white or black.
I really don't know what the kid could've done besides what he did do. You just can't let people follow you around and then walk up on you in a hostile fashion without protecting yourself.
He could have gone home, he could have not become a weed smoking punk, he could have stopped robbing homes in the community. There are quite a few things that he could have done.

Maybe just go home and not attack GZ for following him.

He could have staying in the 7-Eleven and had the guy (behind the counter) call the police. That is what kids are taught to do when they feel that they are in danger. I understand why Trayvon didn't (I would have done the same thing as he did and confront him), but it wasn't the smart choice.
After watching the Zimmerman trail it seems like the people who can stand their ground is white people. Now white people are now saying that Trayvon should have run away
Stand your ground does not give you the permission to shoot someone. In many states you the victim were required to flee if possible, then and only then could you use deadly force to defend yourself. You the victim could be prosecuted for your actions if you have a chance to flee.
With stand your ground laws that is no longer the case but you still have to justify using deadly force.
