The "Support our troops" thread made reminded me of a fact that is very disturbing in America today. Has anybody noticed that the religious right seem to think they have a monopoly on patriotism, the American flag, and supporting the troops? The line between patriotism and religious expression has been blurred to a point that its hard to describe. Shouldn't everybody, of all faiths and of no faith, religious and secular, be proud to be an American?
I think ALL Americans should band together to take the flag back from the religious right.

The religious right can THINK that but its only those people who aren't intelligent enough to realize that patriotism does not equal the sheep-and-cattle mindset where being the government's biggest fanclub is the hot thing to do. There is only a small minority that actually think this. Others typically are aware that even though peoples' political views differ from theirs, the patriotism is not lost in their souls.

Are you insinuating that Christians are not as intelligent as non-christians?
Boy I believe Christians are the most maligned group on P&C. It is a good thing we have tough skins!

No, I'm insinuating there are smart people and dumb people. This is not a division between distinct religions. Funny you feel that way though, when I made no such insinuations. Usually when people relate something to themselves or a group they belong to, it's because they secretly are afraid it might be true.

I'm sick of the politicians who have hijacked the flag, constantly wearing the flag lapel and all. It's almost like they have to keep reminding us that they are Americans. Sometimes I wonder.
And I have to admit, because of this corporate-like use of the flag, I don't look at it the same way as I did... say as when I was a kid.... or heck, even 10 years ago. Honestly, for what I associate the flag with today - and how it's been cheapened by the far right to further their fake patriotic agenda - I can say I cringe a bit when I see it on people's cars...or at the bottom of the screen on Fox News or whatever - for what it seemingly has come to represent - pro war, pro Bush... and seemingly... pro idiocy.
Hopefully someday, I'll look at that flag and feel proud of it again. Right now, I really don't.

I don't think the "Religious Right" has anything to do with it.. Are Neo-Cons getting caught up with the flag-waiving rah rah USA USA crap??? Yes, but the Religious Right isn't your problem on this front.
If anything the Religious Right should be telling a vast majority of this country to f*** off right about now. We defend every major religion in this country without question EXCEPT Christianity these days....
It is pretty disgusting...I especially resent when people try to imply that not being onboard with all this Middle East lunacy equates to not being a patriot or good citizen. Especially when it comes from people that have never done a thing for the country other than to buy one of those cute bumper stickers to stick on their SUVs.
Got news for you, it has always been that way. Patriotism and Christianity have always gone together in THIS country, as it was founded on Judeo-Christian principles. That is not known much any more nor of interest to many, since history is no longer taught. Nothing wrong or aberrant was seen with these two intermingling until the anti-religious socialists got a stranglehold on this country. And that is the fault of a nation's people who have become passive, lazy and apathetic. Don't know what it will take to wake up, 9/11 has come and gone, memories are short.
Anyway, I think there are enough flags to go around for everyone, even those who have disdain for this country and its religious folks.
