They should take the vehicle away also.

No one has to drink and then drive.

Long story short he paid a lawyer 2 grand to get it knocked down to a recklass driving ticket, is this right?
The system still got thier 5 Grand payoff, thats all they were concerned about as far as i saw.Guess my question is, are DUI's a moneymaker to the cops, or do the seriously care about the public"s safety?
I do know cops get bonuses for every drunk they drag in, no secrect there.
I'd like to see your proof. Not what your uncle's, brother's cousin told you, "cops get bonuses" for every drunk they bring in? Show me the facts? You won't find it, because it doesn't occur.

Easy to think you're bulletproof until you're nailed I guess.
Nice lesson for me,I've done it. Most of us here have, right? Seeing what he's going thru, the social stigma, the fines, having to blow into that stupid thing in his car before he starts it(imagine doing that before you give your kid a ride to school, with her watching you?)Guess thats the point of this thread, maybe a few of us will think twice and not get into that DUI ****, at the least, or not kill some innocents, at the worst.Just a wake up call, complain if you want.
This post isnt about the $$$ my friend will have to spend, its about not realizing the damage you can do driving drunk.
Please, dont do it.
Full time job for me now keeping my friend convinced a DUI isnt the end of the world.
No, I have never drank and drove. Ever, I also come to complete stops at stop signs, even while on my bicycle. I also do not speed or talk on the phone while driving. I had one client lose his license for two years because he got snarky and another lost his for a year, the one who got snarky also spent the weekend in jail, every time I saw my client getting a ride, I would ask him if he was going to drink and drive again. This past week while at a clients house doing their yard, I took pictures of what happened to their neighbors car when a man thought he could drive after having one more drink. He was not speeding, nor did he pass out, he just failed to straighten out after going around a curve. I talked with the man across the street and he told me that he had just got home and a full sized chevy truck came around the curve and without ever hitting the brakes, hit the white toyota, shoving it and the mini van forward, the older gentleman driving the truck, then backed his truck out of the toyota pulling it backwards. I grew up with an alcoholic stepfather who frequently drove and drank while driving with us kids in the car, this was the 60's and early 70's. We could have been a casualty at any time and there were many close calls.

I've long said that if someone drinks and drive, that should not be illegal. If they hit someone, or cause damage to property, they should be punished according to their crime. Run a 7 year old kid while drunk, death penalty.
Good answer. I bet almost everyone posting in this thread has driven at least tipsy at one point or another. The problem is people who don't know their limit. I'd rather deal with a generally responsible driver who's had a few than an absentminded teenager texting.

Once upon a time it may have been about public safety, but now it's mainly about making money.

Yes. We've beaten "drunk driving" to so hard that lives are being ruined even though nobody is getting physically hurt. We will NEVER eliminate this 100%, you can make the penalty for smelling like beer 10 years in jail but it's not going to prevent drunks from driving. But you will have hundreds of thousands of new criminals in prison and families ruined...with no victims.

You know...at one point the penalty was minor. Lot more accidents back then from drunk driving....yup 5K less deaths in 2010 compared to 1991

Hmmm.wonder why?

Education I'm guessing. Back in the day when 3 martini lunches were common and businessmen had bars in their offices nobody had the power to do much or even worried about it. Today we are all activists with the click of a button.

It makes it harder to buy your own vehicle.

Think the person who delivers your pizza had to pass a background check?

Who do we let out of jail to make room for a drunk driver?

Anyone can buy a vehicle if they have enough cash.

None of the things you listed does anything to actually prevent a repeat offender from getting into a motor vehicle and driving while intoxicated.
