Surprised not to see a thread about this. It's been covered by the national media for weeks, and the vote ended tonight.

The UAW has fallen from 1.5 million members to 400,000. The article says they must get foreign automakers to unionize to stay afloat. But many workers in the Southern auto plants make more than their UAW counterparts in the rust belt, and they don't have to give up big chunks of their salaries to the UAW.
This was the UAW's best chance at unionization in the foreign, Southern auto factory. Volkswagen "gift wrapped" this vote for them, but the workers decided to vote the union down.
I'md delighted as well; all of the so-called 'transplants' knew about the very contentious history between the UAW and the Detroit Three, and wanted no part of them, and all of them are thriving throughout the Deep South.

There hasn't been labor trouble in years. They have UAW plants, like in Spring Hill, Tn where they've been working a long time without even having a contract.
The UAW accepted deep concessions to keep the industry afloat...even accepting a two tiered pay system.
The union isn't why the Big 3 had problems. They manufactured junk..that's why they had problems.
The company wanted the union on the board the way they have it in Germany.

I hope things like this start to make the US look to countries like Germany and have a reform of how unions are run in this country. Unions are a great thing to have, but unfortunately the US has poorly run unions that do little to benefit Americans, and we could learn a lot from our European friends.

If people would empower the unions, they'd work better.
Even still, having one is better than not having one at the end of the day.
It's interesting that private unionization is going to die but public unions will live on. It should really be the exact opposite, but so should most other things in this country. I think SCOTUS is going to put an end to "union shop" requirements soon. After that private unions will be all but dead in the US.
Tennessee Senator Bob Corker told the workers Volkwagen would receive no more state "incentives" if the workers unionized. It's pure extortion but what were they supposed to do?
The Germans see it as fostering trust, and having the union on the board insures transparency and gives the workers a sense of being more than just an employee. It also streamlines the representation that the company has to deal with on behalf the employees.
But alas...Germans aren't the same dumb goobers that we have in this country...our idiots decided to listen to Tennessee politicians that ran a campaign against union entry.
Americans just can't take yes for an answer.
