My kids are bi-racial (black/white) and we live in a more upper middle class neighborhood. There are kids of all races, but mostly white. I correct their grammar now that they're 6 and don't tolerate "ain't" or too much slang. Anyway, a couple relatives on the black side of their family have commented that "they sound like white boys". And they said it in a very negative way. There are a few people on that side of the family who I can hardly understand, their English is so horrible. An accent is fine. Grammar so horrible that you need a translator is not.
I wonder if is what they say or how they say it. I have a friend who is white and her "white/work" voice just means that she gets a little higher in pitch and a wee bit more nasal. It's like the young girls around my old way who had the valley girl sound down (no idea how that became a thing) but still aren't the best at stringing together a sentence.

They are kids so that may not be the issue. I was just wondering.

When blacks start having father's in their homes then test scores and everything else will be better in their lives.

Parents are the number one reason for a child's success not the teachers. A teacher isn't with the child when their at home using incorrect English. If the parents are speaking incorrectly then their kids will have a hard time speaking correctly.

Also, problems can't be corrected unless their identified. A teacher might be seen as a racist if they try to correct a black child's grammar.
It's funny that people keep using that number. Look at the number of kids who end up in jail for serious offenses, don't graduate high school (ever, not just late), etc. It is nowhere near that 73% mark, so there must be a few other things going on besides a lack of a dad who is also married to their mom.

There is something else to consider. The 73% born out of wedlock statistic does not account for one thing: What happens after the child is born? Does the couple get married? Does the couple live together without getting married?

You do need to understand that South Carolina has one of the highest dropout rates among both Blacks and Whites. In fact, the state you live in, a higher percentage of Blacks are graduating from high school than in South Carolina.

The main dropout states for Blacks: New York, Iowa, Nebraska, Ohio, and South Carolina
Top graduation rates for Blacks: Maine, Arizona, Vermont, Utah, Idaho

You need to look at each state individually.
