Not only that, we've had a "WAR ON DRUGS" for at least a few decades now, AND, we've had US Troops (boots on the ground) in Afghanistan for over a decade - AND, while there, Heroin production has increased exponentially!
Others have touched on most salient points - the mindset of those "anti gun" (it's a tool, get a grip and learn how to respect and use it), mass media bathes the populace in the few instances of mishandling accidents and large scale killing by individuals, while conveniently neglecting to analyze the universe of instances whereby lives were saved or criminal activity was deterred.
The only problem with guns is when the occasional accident occurs due to neglect / poor training / emotional instability and user error. Otherwise, it's a fine tool to defend oneself against oppression whether it be government (as was already clearly posted see Jefferson's quote) as well as dispatch criminals swiftly while in the act of criminal behavior. To paraphrase an old saying, "as long as those engaging in certain egregious criminal behaviors are being permanently eliminated "that's good gun control".
Think of it like the axiom: don't have the dog hate the behavior.
Don't hate the tool (gun) hate those who misuse it (criminal).

Nice try trying to obfuscate the problem by failed comparisons, hyperbole and rhetoric. Facts on the actual issue be damned!
Guns don't kill people, people kill people. No gun has ever pulled its own trigger. Period.
Blaming guns for Columbine is the same thing as blaming spoons for Rosie O'Donnell being fat.
The difference being that Rosie isn't shoving food down someone else's mouth and making them fat. If morons with guns only shot themselves, I would be in favor of shoveling all the guns we can at society and letting stupid people self-delete.
But it doesn't work that way. Morons with guns often find a way to shoot people just trying to get through their day.
And look what those laws have done... seems to be working huh ?
Well now it's too late. The guns are out there, and banning them now will only disarm law abiding citizens.
Gun control can only work if there's never been a widespread gun culture, whether by gun control from the beginning or an otherwise lack of access to them anyway.
It's also important that neighboring countries are similarly not saturated with guns/active black market for guns.
If we could start totally fresh, I'd be more inclined to support gun control from the beginning.
But at this point, the damage has been done, and people need to defend themselves from fire with fire.
