Alexander notes that the federal government borrows the funds for the student loan program at 2.8 percent and then lends it to the students at 6.8 percent, a markup of 4 percent.

None of the above has anything at all to do with "Free Tuition", but it does show the total disconnect with reality. You are correct about one thing - the "students are needed to keep the gravy train on track" ..... and to provide the votes for the Gravy Train Engineers.

Au contraire! Educators from K to PhD and also management, staff, admin...will all deserve salary increases ...and campuses and other facilities will also require many upgrades.

Not a problem since the government is paying.

well im not really worried about kids and/or snowflakes but as an individual living some place on planet earth, I am NOT INTERESTED in the government directing ME toward some particular form of education or limitation.

I am dyslexic. my parents were told to let me drop out of HS in 8th grade and get a trade.

they didn't accept what they were told by the "experts". ive done significantly better than that. I guess I would have been one of those "snowflakes" had we had a system where government directed people toward education opportunities.

All these republicans are having wet dreams about the evils of "socialism" but totally ignore the evils of capitalism and its threat and past crimes against humanity.

Our students and young people today are struggling with huge loan debts when there is no guarantee of finding any jobs in this economy, and many even low-paying jobs; indeed, students who find jobs right after college still must pay their huge debts, or their parents' which isn't easy. Yes, community college is more affordable, and there are "scholarships" and "financial aid" out there, but still not enough and you could talk of tens of thousands of student loans after graduating despite all of this "free" money. Going to college is very expensive, and shouldn't be! Now those who chose to attend private college is different, and graduate school should be charged. Yes, I understand college isn't for everyone and surprisingly despite college being free of charge in many other nations, not all students decide to attend college or pick "crappy" majors.

I believe undergraduate degree should be free of charge for all students just like K - 12 in public schools. However, students must do good in high school to qualify. Public colleges should not be for profit!
Once you get into that free college, please enroll in an economics course. There, you will learn that nothing is "free." If you got something of value that you think is for free, it just means you consumed something at someone else's cost.

There is another disconnect here.

YES the cost of education has risen faster than inflation and gotten pretty out of hand over the last 20 years.

BUT the crazy left has its hand out demanding other people PAY without even considering WHY that cost has risen so much.

The fact is, demand for a college education has risen BECAUSE of how easy it is to get college loans. government started intervening in that last 20 years and government intervention has driven the cost of college to ridiculously high levels.

Liberalism is the cause of the problem. anyone thinking liberalism could be the answer has a solid insanity defense if they ever get in trouble with the law.

Many of the things blamed on capitalism has nothing to do with capitalism. The bail outs were not capitalism. QE is not capitalism. If anything those are more aligned with socialism.

I am talking throughout history....Oh and that stuff is a DIRECT impact of capitalism. Not socialism. You can't just blame socialism when capitalism fails like it does so often. Socialism makes sure everyone enjoys a comfortable life, capitalism makes sure the top 1% enjoys a comfortable life and somehow they manage to get an entire political party and its cronies to go along with helping them.

Wait, wait... so you are saying that the government is better than the market?

Blind following of any "ism" is foolishness. Do what works well is my motto. Thats often a blend. I love capitalism, but recognize some of its shortcomings. Same with pretty much anything. Pick what works, that gets the world to where you want it to be.
