Of course it would be a deterrent. But yes, it would also fill more jails.

This may be a good law but only if it's augmenting some very drastic changes in how illegals are handled to begin with. Mandate e-verify nationwide and implement severe penalties for those hiring them. Problem solved.
I don't think there is any easy solution but yes, fight the battle on all fronts.

How much does it cost to keep someone in jail for 5 yrs.? I agree we need to end the incentives for them to come here.

Providing employers with the tools and requiring them to use them under the threat of going to jail will work wonders.

Jailing illegals would be much less effective than jailing those who hire them.

I stand by my original view. Crossing the border illegally, while wrong to a a point, without ill intentions is of very little concern to me. Once caught, I think they're situation needs to be evaluated. If they've been in the US for years and are just trying to make a living, give them some time to apply for citizenship and let them be. If they've been causing trouble, deport them and warn that if they try and come back, they must do so legally.

Like I said, all of our policy seems to be about catching the immigrants and not about fixing the system. I know we can create jobs that shouldn't exist by having people try to find illegal immigrants, but a smarter solution (if the government's capable of one) would have better long term results.

The Mitch McConnell website is taking signatures for the required petition.
That's a start. Add mandatory e-verify and seize any assets being sent out of the country by criminal aliens.

Immigration violations is already the number one reason illegals are in prison/jail in the US.
Does McConnell's proposal include a funding provision?

I don't see it on his website.
Why is a petition "required"? Why does the leader of the Senate "require" a petition?
Sounds like grandstanding.

Not quite. Bill O'Reilly has a petition on his website addressed to Boehner and McConnell. I see no links that McConnell is on board or is proposing legislation.
Let's call it Bill O'Reilly's Law.
