Sen. Mitch McConnell is going to introduce legislation that would be called Kate's law. Kate Steinle was the woman killed by a man that had been deported back to Mexico 5 times.

Kate's Law would mandate prison time for 5 years for those caught back in this country after being deported.
The Mitch McConnell website is taking signatures for the required petition.

Mitch McConnell always comes out with weak legislation when it comes to illegal immigration. Sanctuary cities need to ended too. The news said there are over 100 sanctuary cities across 31 states. That could be almost every major and large city lol

Is it a deterrent or are we just be going to be filling more jails?

This may be a good law but only if it's augmenting some very drastic changes in how illegals are handled to begin with. Mandate e-verify nationwide and implement severe penalties for those hiring them. Problem solved.

Filling jails with criminals is a good thing.

The most important question that can be asked, but likely won't be asked by anyone with any real power. Which is a shame.

Strengthen border security. Tackle the problem at it's roots. This is the equivalent of putting a bucket under a leak. Fix the leak if you want to actually do something important.

A criminal is just someone who breaks the law. This is not a character judgment. A criminal is not a bad person and creating new crimes to create new criminals to satisfy a fictional sense of justice is what tyrants do and what idiots support.

So you don't think sneaking into this country is committing a crime. Over and over?

That could be, yes. I was disagreeing with you're statement on the basis that a criminal isn't a good or bad person. It's anyone who breaks the law, which is actually most people. Speeding is a crime, thus doing so makes you a criminal. Should you go to jail? Of course not.

Prison should be reserved for people who put others in harms way, not just for people we don't like very much. If you have to stretch the logic to justify their incarceration, they probably shouldn't be in jail.

Crossing the boarder illegally should be a crime though. We need to address that. It shouldn't exaggerated as to how serious it is though. It's hardly the worst thing a person could do; not even close. Five years should be the maximum someone would get for doing something like this, and that's after multiple offenses. A first time offender who has committed no other serious crime should be given a warning and a short time to go through the process legally; failure results in deportation.

We also need to simplify the process so it's quick but thorough. This will motivate more people to do so legally, where as the current system is quite a hassle.

I believe the warning is the first deportation. Then Explain in no uncertain terms..... You come back, you go to prison.

Certainly if they are violent criminals legal or illegal but putting a bunch of people in jail that might just be here for work isn't very practical especially considering how many of them there are. This has the smell of a knee jerk reaction and not very well thought out. If you want to address illegal immigrants you need to go to the root of the problem by eliminating the incentive of them wanting to come here in the first place.
