Russia IS Mexico with nukes; crooked and so on. The big difference is that Russia's population is dropping every year because of a very low birthrate AND their men dying too young.
Doesn't matter for a war between to nuclear powers. For nuclear war you don't need ground troops.
We shouldn't be expanding NATO anyway. Why should Americans give Swedes a guarantee that we'll defend them? I won't fight for Sweden.
The Finns didn't lay down for the Russians...they prepared themselves and fought. The Swedes should build up their defense posture and stop looking for a protector.

My theory about the Finns is that they were a group of humans plucked from Asia by aliens 3,000 years ago, then later dropped back on the earth at a different location. Heck, they may actually be humanoid aliens. They're peculiar in a lot of ways. You can't use the Finns as a model for anything.
If there is ever World War III between Russia vs. the West, my prediction is that you will see the GOP tea party base align themselves with their hero Adolf Putin....

My Prediction the Socialist Left and the Democrats will sigh with Putin, based on policies that the DNC has portrayed. You do not have to worry about the Tea Party, it it comes time I am sure most of the Tea would do their duty. To my Knowledge it is the Tea Party has demanded the President do more in the Ukraine.

You are correct , sadly, that we may have WW3 if Putin does not bluff. Russians do not joke in these matters. Have you ever been in Berlin when the City was occupied? (Cold War) Russians hate Americans for our Freedoms.
There would be no WW3. Unless you consider the exchange of a few dozens nuclear rockets WW3. Human life would cease to exist on the entire planet anyway.

Picture yourself as the president of the Russian Federation and along your entire western and southern borders are these nations which have joined a military alliance formed for only one purpose, to defend each other against you. What would you be doing or saying?
Now I think that Vladimir Putin is a kleptocrat and an xenophobic nationalist of the highest order but I can't see how any Russian leader would find the enlargement of NATO as a threat.

The thing is, the European NATO countries would have been happy to let bygones be bygones and move ahead with some economic alignment, open trade etc. It was Russia who bungled their attempt at building anything resembling a modern country - mostly by handing off whatever parts of the nationalized industries that were worth anything to cronies who are now obscenely rich and not about to let go.
They started the military d.ck-waving, what with their armed forces being the only part of their society that can at least look like it competes with the West.
For about a decade, NATO was an office building in Brussels looking for a purpose. Putin's main foreign policy accomplishment has been to revitalize the orgnaization. Oh, and Sweden isn't going to join. They're going to implement "Inter-Scandinavian" military cooperation, and if that happens to include NATO countries, well...

The Swedes aren't exactly skimping on defense. They build their own gear, lots of it, and it's very good. But a nation of 8 million people aren't going to hold off Russia. The Finns lost a good chunk of their territory, too, as you may remember.
Putin loves the church, hates the gays and mingles with the Very Rich. Not really DNC politics there..
Those are Social Issues that this countries courts (for now) have decided and most of us even though it is a downward life style must a bid by the law. Putin makes up laws as he goes verses Most Americans do believe in rights and the rule of law.
The DNC Policy is and has been lead from behind and Putin has no respect for Obama , Clinton or even Kerry. Since the DNC choice to deal with Putin from NOT, a position of Strength, the DNC has compromised our Position on so many levels.
Gay issue is such a none issue ,but you and others are obsessed with your life style, when there is much bigger concerns we have as a Nations. Since you have hinted that you are not of this country, I expect you will be the first to bail on a country that has offered you a home and the promise of Success.
