It's one variable of many. Bottom line is that manufacturer could of closed up his US shop and ran his business from a lazy boy, they would have shipped direct to his dealers. He wouldn't even have to handle the product.
In this case they can stay competitive because it's a niche market, all his competitors are operating under the same economic conditions at this point.
We have a specific market where I work. They have tried and tried to move much of it to China but we have customers that won't accept an inferior product.
Regulations don't make the difference. Wages aren't the difference. What people are willing to accept it the difference. There is a reason that refrigerators once had 5 year warranties but now you are lucky with 6 month warranties.
Robotics and 3D Printing are going to put most of the 3rd world sweatshops out of business within 20 years.
What Trump should be worried about is keeping the money and banking in this country.
All those other countries will have 3D printers and robots too. Remember, US corporations wanted to screw their workforce so badly that they handed over all their latest and greatest technology to the communist Chinese regime. Their hatred of fair wages for American workers is that strong.
Today, these corporations have even less of a technological advantage.
fulfill the duty they had to shareholders to maximize value.
Short term. That is the problem. We determine a business's worth based upon nothing but the next P&L statement. If you are making a product and making $20 million dollars doing it you are going to get hit hard on the markets if you say next year that we are going to employ 500 people and make 20.5 million.
That does not make the banker class happy. We have made a huge, huge mistake by allowing the bankers run our industries as opposed to the scientists and engineers.
Most analysts predict prices of goods would skyrocket. For example Apple's marquee iPhone 6S is approximately $650 -- would you be willing to pay for the phone if it was $1,300? Or more? $1,300-yes, $2000 or more not so sure.
Re: Immigrant Work unrelated to free trade
Here in FL, I suspect home prices will double. I have yet to go past a housing community where homes are being constructed and 9 out of 10 workers are Hispanic. I'm not sure if they're temporary workers or full blown US citizens. Impossible to know unless you investigated. But home prices here are pretty low compared to the rest of the country and probably a reason why so many people are moving here.
Other goods like food/fruit will drastically increase down here as well. Every field being harvested again is filled with Hispanic workers and usually one or two Caucasian supervising.
And the Climate Scientologists Hucksters will not lift a finger to stop diesel powered container ships from crossing back and forth across the Pacific Ocean for political reasons of course.
Wait a minute ........ Private people in the USA BURN coal ? How backwards is that ?
No wonder we get so much air pollution here in Ontario, from the Ohio river valley.
BTW, Ontario has no coal burning electrical power generator plants anymore. None . Fifty percent nuclear, and fifty percent hydro power , from waterfalls and rivers.
And when demand plummets and the economy tanks, I'm sure many of those companies will be dropping like flies. That's what happens when you ignore the long term obligations of a corporation.
What do you suppose those long term obligations are? Do you even know? You are always talking about the short term objectives of these corporations, but never the long term ones. Why is that?
