Not a safe place to be, certainly, but it's not common knowledge among tourists that alligators live in waterways even in highly developed areas like the Disney properties nor that they can move extremely fast and will seize small animals and children who are on the shore, dragging their prey back into the water to incapacitate it by drowning before typically swallowing it whole. People think these attacks happen IN the water, but they're wrong.

Disney has some explaining to do. That there was a sandy beach and lagoon-side activities in the evenings, making it inviting to walk along the shoreline, is potentially going to come back to haunt them. I'm sure the attorneys are already lining up on both sides. I see a big check in this family's future, along with some major construction around that lagoon. Other lakes/lagoons on the Disney properties have raised and fenced boardwalks to keep people out of the water, and there should have been one here, too.
Agreed.

I nearly threw up when I saw this story in the news. It knocked the wind out of me. Loving my children as I do, I cannot wrap my head around the sheer terror they must have felt as their child was pulled away into the water nor can I fully process the intense grief they must be experiencing today. I'm just numb with sadness for them on top of all of the other tragedies Orlando has experienced these past few days. And the rescue workers? Oh my gosh, how much pain they must feel, too. It's all too much.

Just the most gut wrenching thing for a family to deal with, and to know their child died to brutally in the mouth of a gator just makes it worse.

I do feel there should have been signs warning of gators. This family was from Nebraska and they have no experience with dangers of wildlife in waterways there. They probably didn't give a second thought to gators being present. This was at night which made it even more dangerous to be near the water. I'll bet Disney is scrambling to change this but I do see a lawsuit and rightfully so.

I realize warning visitors about the presence of alligators in the "lagoon" (which has actual Disney-made SAND BEACHES, for pete's sake) doesn't fit the 'happiness and fairy dust' image Disney wishes to promote, but they DO have a responsibility to their visitors. People visit Disney World/Epcot from all over the U.S. and all over the world, many of whom have NO knowledge of the habits and dangers of alligators. This family was from Nebraska. They had NO clue, and Disney didn't warn them.

And you are exactly right! People from other Countries and other States, may not be keenly aware of the dangers alligators possess. There should be signs in every area of the park warning of the gators. Can't hurt to have them.

Better safe then a tragedy such as this.

If they have trappers, no way to know if got them all or if others came looking for mates- it is Florida. This is the first incident of this nature that I am aware of at DW - I believe DW will try to compensate somehow to this family-- cant fix it but Im sure will help financially in what they can or accommodate them during this hard time-

You went from saying they didn't follow the rules and should have stayed out of the water, to this when someone corrects you?

It's another heartbreaking day. I cannot imagine the pain and anguish these parents must be in. And I'm still reeling by the tragedy at the Pulse and thinking about those family and friends and survivors.

When reading the stories on this today, the time stuck out. 930pm. Seems a little late. It's either dusk or dark at 930pm in Orlando and that's when alligators start moving more as the air gets cooler in the summer.

As much as I've read about Disney removing skunks, raccoons, and other critters away from their property, little surprised that there were known alligators in the lake. Lots of questions. Can't imagine the grief, especially the sibling.

They were at an evening movies-on-the-beach event.

Disney hires experts to come in and remove what gators may be in the waters.

Gators migrate all the time and it's nearly impossible to deter them.

I've seen gators climb chain link fences to get to a backyard pool.

Heck, though they prefer fresh water, we had a few on Lauderdale beach (salt water) years ago.
