Honestly, get him out of karate immediately, or more aptly switch to a true self defense form. Mma, krav maga, even combat sambo or good ole fashion 'wrasslin'. Hand to hand self defense, all are much more apt for a better outcome.
karate is a good martial art, and the basis of all martial arts. i do agree though that it is only a start, not an end. as bruce lee told his students, never rely on one form alone. this is why there are many forms of karate, and kung fu.
