I agree. Explain to people how the entitlements they've paid into their entire life are going away and see how that goes.

There are other alternatives, of course, but that would be a fine starting point.
Didn't we already do that in 1976 with the Hyde Amendment? It bans all federal funds from being spent on abortion with the exception of cases of incest, rape, or maternal endangerment.

Except there is no federal funding for abortion allowed since the 1976 Hyde Amendment. Oh, and total funding for Planned Parenthood, which I'm sure is your evil organization of choice, is less than $400M a year. That's not even a dent in the nearly $54B INCREASE in defense spending proposed for this year.

Sorry.... academia.

His industry interviews were higher salary wise, but fresh out of grad school, he was either overqualified or underqualified.... I just know that where they are concerned, there is a glut of highly educated scientists with thousands of applicants for a single job and why we are taking visa holders for these seems crazy. It begs the question (at least in my mind) are we turning out PhD's at too rapid a rate thus watering down the talent pool or is this all about the $$'s? It is all going to work out in the end I think, he seems happy and has got a project going which will result in several publications with some outstanding and very high profile PI's, but it just seemed to me that after that much higher education that something is completely out of whack.

Ahh but we support the institutions, corporations and businesses that love to kick Americans to the curb-- in the name of "Capitalism" and now no regulations-- wait to see how much more they will stick it to us.. Yea- keep thinking they have us in mind...

Aus is both. Academia has been pretty bad for Americans for the last 20 years. They literally compete with the whole world. It's a disservice. I will not encourage my kids to obtain a phd in hard science. A master in the engineering of the moment suffices.

Planned Parenthood is still being funded, at least in part, and as you yourself admit, with federal tax dollars, contrary to sound public policy. Why, you ask? The only "women's health services" they actually offer are abortions. If you went to Planned Parenthood and asked for a Pap smear or a mammogram, both of which unquestionably fall under the heading of women's health services, they would be unable to assist with anything other than a referral. But enough dealing with clumsy attempts at deflection.

The question at hand was "Where will we get all of our new taxpayers, if not for immigration, illegal or otherwise?" One partial answer, obviously, is to cease the practice of killing the nation's future citizens in utero.

You asked for an answer, and you got one.

Your silly affectation of moral high dudgeon regarding a proposed $54 billion increase in defense spending is rendered laughably moot in light of the $867 billion stimulus package (purportedly for infrastructure improvements) proposed by Obama and passed by Congress in 2009. Even Obama was forced to admit that legislation was 1) a titanic failure of historic proportions and 2) merely an expensive sop to public employee unions. Notably absent from this naked boondoggle were any real results in the area of infrastructure improvement.

If you're going to pretend to be worried about federal spending, the 2009 pork package (which, even with $867 billion dollars expended, delivered almost no actual pork, per Obama's craven admission) was what you needed to concern yourself with.

Well that's it then isn't it?

People are all in favour of "merit based" immigration until they realize exactly what that means.

Instead of poor and "unskilled" or "low skilled" immigrants you get large numbers of those with four year and or post graduate degrees. That and or skilled labor such as airline pilots, railroad engineers, etc....

Either way it means competition for all those nice (and often protected) white collar jobs things like academia, teaching, engineering, finance/Wall Street, journalism (both television and print), and so forth. That is when you start to see daylight from the liberal left about "immigration.

It is all very well for some to bring in those that will do the jobs "Americans wont", but ask your local physician how he or she feels about an upsurge of doctors arriving in the USA.
