Russia is anything but a "mentally unstable schoolyard bully", if we had an competition for the most Machiavellian politician in the world, Putin should collect the first 3 prizes...by the way, we been the bully and not minding our own business in the Russian sphere of influence....do not poke the bear....

What I don't understand is, why can't we be friends with Russia?

In case you haven't noticed, we've been friendly with Russia fo quite a while, otherwise there'd be no American astronauts on the ISS.

Perhaps the real question is why should we be friends with a KGB thug with no qualms about invading sovereign nations who deals with those who oppose him by placing them on the Polonium Pension Program?

What country Putin has invaded?? I'm all ears....stop spouting nonsense and actually learn a bit of history...it could be useful...

Is Putin a saint?? No he is a nasty SOB......simply he is not someone like Yeltsin that the West could walk all over....as long as he had his daily gallon of Vodka...

83% approval rating....a wet dream for any western politician.

A similar question would be "Why can't we be friends with Charles Manson?" The results would be about the same.

They'd rather be friends with Iran, and Cuba. Guess you'd have to ask them.

By the way, in that USA link; they blame Trump's careless rhetoric for advancing the hands of the 'clock'. It is funny that many think Trump is a Russian puppet while still thinking he will start WWIII!
Actually, what it is is that if we are friends with Russia, then they have no issue, and that messes up their plans to have the election nullified (which isn't going to happen no matter what they think).

Charles Manson does not have the power to destroy the Northern Hemisphere! Russia and our response does. Manson is a homicidal maniac; but your thinking is more along the lines of Jim Jones in Guyana. Perhaps you think nuclear war is winnable? Your side worries about climate change and disappearing Monarch Butterflies. Get your act together!

They have had paid informants/spies/'journalist' digging since the beginning. They basically came up with squat. It would not surprise me if they did not check out his dirty toilet paper - they have sunk that low.

The Russians look after their own interests, and if they can lull you in to a nse of false friendship and you allow them ever more influence then they will be delighted. At best we should try and have some form of dialogue and workable diplomatic relationship with Putin's Russia however a trusting close friendship is never going to be on the agenda.

Thanks for the UK perspective. It all looks a little different when you are on the same continent.
