Wow that letter and this CEO is awful. He actually said the passenger was disruptive and belligerent and that they apologetically explained that he was being "denied boarding." The man and the entirely plane was already boarded! United is acting like they're bestowing a special privilege on us by letting us fly when we buy a ticket! Maybe because they get to use law enforcement they think they ARE law enforcement?
Ridiculous.
Yeah, remember those periodic stories of folks stuck on the tarmac for hours, even if their plane hasn't gone anywhere near pre-flight taxiing and sometimes parked right at the jetway, for multiple hours? Strapped in and forbidden sometimes to as much as remove their seatbelts, often with the on-plane bathroom rendered non-functioning? I do - I've been one, though not of such an excitingly long delay that it would make the news; it's excruciating, even if it's only 20-30 minutes. Just you watch - when the airlines want to consider you "boarded" from the point of view of "keeping you stuck in a cattle stanchion, aka "your seat", where they can control you", then you darn well better consider yourself "boarded".
But, you can also be in the same exact physical state of affairs - sitting in an airplane seat at the gate with a seatbelt swaddled around you - and if the airlines decide that this means your "boarding is still a work in progress, because we need you to scoot out of that stanchion right chippety-chop to make room for our deadheading employees", you better be prepared to stand at attention and scoot, missy and/or mister!
Why would China be upset, the guy has Vietnamese heritage.
In one of the videos, he said he was Chinese. He may have come from Vietnam. Before the war there many ethnic Chinese living in Vietnam but went to the US as refugees.
Anyone who thinks United acted badly, but opposes government regulation of business might want to reconsider their position. Without some kind of regulation, we can only look forward to more incidents like this one.

Millions in China are viewing the video with disgust.
Wonder how this will impact ticket sales on United's China routes.
Yep, he was assaulted in a case of police brutality. He could have been removed without the threat of assault.
How? He refused to vacate his seat. The plane would have been grounded for hours if there was a standoff of asking him to leave and he wouldn't. He was asked to leave without the threat of assault and didn't, unlike the other three. (Yeah, I know, the other three weren't doctors---but so what? He only works one day a week at a clinic---and peer reviews have shown that he lacks the skills that a pulmonologist should have---don't understand why they even let him practice one day a week. His patients will survive if he didn't see them the next day---in fact, they'd probably do even better.)
And if his wife was one of the three who vacated the plane, what was he going to do---let her be stranded in Chicago while he flew him? Nice!

What difference does it make why he declined to be robbed?
Or in corporate speak, "refused to vacate his seat," to be "re-accomodated."
United Airline flight 3411 will now be known as the Loiusville Slugger. The Skinhead skies of United are on my no fly list.
