It all depends on how you define the term "diverse". How many languages are spoken in America compared to the Roman Empire at its peak?
Serious question, Is this a white supremacist forum? I see a lot of posts that seem like they should be on Stormfront or other white nationalist forums instead of what is billed as a mainstream forum. The OP and several of the responses would be good examples.
They were not seen as "ethnically homogenous" back in the day. Lots of smaller ethnic groups in those countries have assmiliated into the term "Brit", "Spanish", "French" etc. Look at how people self-identified in those areas 200 years ago.
Your statement is just flat wrong. 200 yrs ago those countries had more distinct national ethnicities than they do now. Its the global migrations of the modern era of mobility that have brought various smaller ethnic groups together.

Anyway, I think people should be encouraged to assimilate more than they do. We aren't as diverse as we think we are. This was supposed to be a melting pot...well, let's keep on melting. Let's downplay our differences. The more we hang onto whatever makes us different, the harder it is to be a unified country. The Japanese succeed because they emphasive conformity.
The bolded = , IMO, but lets look at some other things that are very different from the U.S. re balance (balance as in weight of a group or groups....not the specifics of groups):
Ethnic groups in Japan:
98.5 % - Japanese
00.5 % - Koreans
00.4 % - Chinese
00.6 % - Other
Religion in Japan:
91.4 % - Shintoism, Buddhism, or (most likely) both
01.5 % - Christianity
07.1 % - Other
The Japanese have a high life expectancy and a low obesity rate, but....
they also have a low birth rate, and their government debt expressed as a percentage of GDP is 250.4 %

If hearing people speak freely about differences in national identities and ethnicities qualifies as supremacist speech to you then I would suggest you've lost all tolerance for free expression and yes ... you're in the wrong place and should probably leave.
95% eh? Prove that. Ethnically homogenous European countries such as Germany, France, Britain and Spain have historically been extremely successful.
Albania, ethnically homogeneous and it's one of poorest countries in Europe. Yemen is a homogeneous country. It is the poorest country in the Middle East. Yemen is ravaged right now. The capital had to move from Sana'a to Aden because of the violence. Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, is ethnically homogeneous. 58% of Haiti's population suffers from some form of malnutrition. Centuries of political upheaval, dictatorship, and severe poverty. Paraguay is ethnically homogeneous. Oddly enough, some of its ethnic minorities are doing better than the average Paraguayan. This is a country where there has been many years of upheaval and violence. It's peaceful now, but it's one of the poorest nations in the Western Hemisphere.
