Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg gave the commencement address at Harvard for the Class of 2017, where he suggested a Universal Basic Income, meaning free money for everyone, so they could be creative and pursue their dreams
Proof that you can be brilliant and still be a real idiot. I'm all for him taking his money and sending everyone a check.
That ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Money for nothin' and chicks for free
Now that ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Lemme tell ya them guys ain't dumb
Maybe get a blister on your little finger
Maybe get a blister on your thumb
Actually...no we arent. It would be a huge driver of innovation. Ask around, ask folks "if you knew your basic bills were covered, would you start your own business" and watch the responses. Even 10% would revolutionize this country.
When someone cannot figure out how to pay their own bills why would you think they could run a business? Whether it's working for someone or running your own business you need to prove yourself first.
Just think what it would be like if everyone owned a house. Remember that? How'd that work out?

Ironic. Did someone provide Zuckerberg with "free" money that allowed him to create Facebook? Or did he create Facebook through hard work, like everyone else who builds wealth for themselves? His message seems odd. You would think that he would be extolling the virtues of hard work and perseverance.
But not yet. Not even remotely. Now is the time to discuss it, and under what circumstances it would be appropriate, but with less then 20% unemployment, its not the time for it.
Inevitable?
Do you people that talk like this ever think about how ridiculous this is?

so anyone can achieve what zuckerberg did , is that what your saying effectively ?
I'd be for a basic income of $4,032/year for all those age 18+. That's the $1 trillion/year we spend on the various means-tested social welfare programs divided by the population in that age category.
Then, eliminate all forms of means-tested social welfare programs. Let the people choose how to spend their basic income, and work to earn more if they find it to be insufficient to meet their needs.
It must be very easy for someone who is a billionaire to hand out money. Mark Zuckerberg has never worked a day in his life, but he should try that theory on someone who works 60 hours a week as an auto mechanic, or a plumber or welder, and see how his idea goes over.
Socialism never works as sooner than later you run out of other people money.
Since Zuckerberg never finished his College he may have missed that class.
Zuckerberg stole the Facebook idea and did great with the stolen concept.
Just as the Harry Potter writer J.K Rowling who also stole someone else's idea and who is also having a big mouth without putting her money where her mouth is.
People like that should not donate the majority of their money after they die but right now if they feel so strong about social issues!
Live like the middle class lives and donate the rest!
I don't care if wealthy people keep their money as long as they don't utter these sentences of how others are heartless while they are brainless and heartless as they don't put their money where their mouth is
However all these big yelling wealthy people have the biggest walls around their homes and security guards with weapons to defend them.
Theres another side to this people have not considered. A basic income would mean that people could pursue starting their own businesses without fear of being homeless, and broke.
Depends on how its set up. Some people say that children would only get a smaller portion in order to avoid that exact scenario. But even so-Kids are a major expense, and a huge time investment.

It means working people aren't penalized for working; we get the same payments as the parasites, and people have to do something productive if they want children because UBI is just enough to cover an adult.
These are both great points. I'm still not sure how I feel about it though. While I think the cuts that Trump proposed are obviously dramatic I'm just not sure if this will work. Perhaps it helps I'm not a fan of change unless there is an obvious benefit?

When I read this I was like "this would be my wildest dream". If very little people are motivated to work that means I'm the only one applying for a job. Yes! But wait a minute wouldn't that mean I am now expected to make money to sustain everyone's income? As much as I want to work and I'm okay with the way it is now paying taxes for those in need this might be going above and beyond. Better yet would this stop the employers from being employers so I'd have no one to tell me what to do and no way can I own my own business. A lot of businesses I use might close down. Will there be as many airlines, hotels etc so how will I travel?
Maybe it helps I am an overthinker but I don't know there seems to be no clear solution to the economic problem when you think about it.

I know. I'm sad about this. I was talking to this lady who worked at Verizon and I was mentioning to her about how say for example my VCR has lasted years while Iphones easily become obsolete to the point you can't use them as well. She said that it's because they make this newer technology with robots and I thought that makes sense. Although I do think that part of it is they purposefully slow it down to get you to buy you a new one I think automation is starting to become more prevalent. I also thought I wanted a self driving car because I don't think I'll ever be able to learn how to drive and don't want to have to rely on others but at the same time computers can glitch or get hacked. They're also going to be super expensive when they come out.
As much as I'm a technology enthusiast we are already going too far with it as it is (for example job applications. let's go back to all paper!) It's going to be way too much. I'm kinda scared we'll get to the point where it will be like the movie Wall E (if you ever seen it). There are some things that should progress but other things should take a step back.
