It's not necessarily about money. There is a family a couple blocks over from us (this is not a poor neighborhood), whose front yard looks like a flea market. I get that, but I had the impression that DD was shaming people for being slobs, not for being poor.
Of course, the whole "city people do this and country people do that" thing is absurd in the first place, I agree. Actually, the whole premise of this thread is absurd, when you get down to it. It's "really" American if Americans do it, and that covers a lot of territory.
