They are going to crush the Dems in 2018, it takes a lot to lose this badly to anyone as mediocre as republicans

The Democrats are so inept that the DNC was attacking trump for not building the wall. Which evidently made the Bernie wing mad because it made the DNC look like it was in favor of the wall.

What, specifically, did any of the Founders say that would translate to support for single payer health insurance ?

I agree, but it really is pathetic that those were the only two likely potential realities.

The preamble and some of the text is a good place to start.

General Welfare legal definition of General Welfare

General Welfare. The concern of the government for the health, peace, morality, and safety of its citizens. Providing for the welfare of the general public is a basic goal of government. The preamble to the U.S. Constitution cites promotion of the general welfare as a primary reason for the creation of the Constitution ...
Not saying 'free healthcare' is the answer, but an affordable and robust system would be a pretty big boon for national productivity and foster a more competitive economic environment.

It's not all a 'downside'.

Very true, but I still think Trump was the only Republican candidate who could have won. The fact that he's not a long time conservative and talked like an old school labor Democrat is how he won those midwestern states. They would not have voted for Ted Cruz, or most of the other candidates.
