War did become horrific in the 20th century, but only because weapons became increasingly deadly.
In ancient and primitive times, war kept the population down. But it exploded anyway.
Humans are too smart and too successful as a species, and that will be our downfall.
Other animals use violence sparingly, when necessary. They aren't "smart" enough to invent nuclear weapons. Or maybe they are TOO SMART to invent nuclear weapons!
Life is a mix of happiness and suffering. Wars are a fact of human existence, the idea that there will never be another conflict like WWII is a dream. While the DOD budget is bloated and full of pork, there is no doubt that the military is essential to protect the homeland, because one day we WILL be fighting another worldwide conflict.
Yes, I agree, war is an inescapable fact. Unfortunately, our species has figured out a way to make war impossible (nuclear weapons). And there are probably bioweapons we can't even imagine.
I honestly don't see how we can survive much longer.
Oh I've been living on this earth for 79 yrs and lived thru many wars and America has always been prepared to FIGHT AND KILL....don't get into these wars in the beginning. Our country has a love affair with military and keeps them who come home living on the streets. So eager to fight that is this country.
... And it should remain so. When Muslim extremists brought murder to the streets of America they touched off a war that will never end as long as any of their number persists. And that's the way it should be.
The War on Terror will probably go on forever, as will the War on Drugs, The War on Bank Robbery, The War on Speeding, and on and on. The "Wars" should go on as long as the "Enemy" exists. It can be no other way.
In case you were wondering why there was something called the cold war and communism. Money was not the incentive to protect us from those critical threats. Freedom was. Things have changed dramatically since the 1960's with mass media controlling what people thought and the liberalization of the economy. Things will change again now that people are becoming more aware of what is really happening and has happened.
How old are you, that you haven't yet figured out that:
1. Men like war, especially chicken hawks like Trump
2. War is big business, so of course there are people forever agitating for military action
How old are you in categorically stating that "men like war"? Is that any worse than me stating that "women should be in the kitchen, barefoot"? I'm male, and I sure as **** do not like war.
Would you rather we be unprepared to defend ourselves?????????
I won't take the bait on the others that assume America has a responsibility to fight other people's battles, but this is just beyond ridiculous. Our military budget goes far beyond "defending ourselves." By a lot.
