Let us not overlook that the students were invited to the event in part to share feedback about their experiences at the college, and when they raised an issue of concern, they were brushed off. What is the inherent message in that? It's that their opinions don't matter. That they should just sit down, shut up, eat their collards, and know their place. And you wonder why they're upset? Sheesh!

Personally I think the centerpiece is attractive. But of course my great great great great great great great grandparents weren't field hands on a plantation picking cotton.
They were too busy dying from a potato fungus.
Cotton stalks are not attractive as a centerpiece...for any table. STOP IT NOW!!

The truly sad part is that the cotton decor is front and center news about that dinner party while the fact that Black students' concerns got brushed off to the wayside.
They shouldn't be too upset though. They took pictures and tweeted and posted all about the decor and the food so they have some blame in this.
So imagine you and the other Irish students were invited to dinner, supposedly to talk of your experience of being Irish on campus.
You were served colcannon (mashed potatoes with cabbage), with Lucky Charms for dessert. Decor included vintage signs stating "Irish need not apply," and jokes were made about how no wine would be served as the Irish are all a bunch of drunks.

I agree with these...and cotton swabs looks awkward and out of place.

Blame for what?
