Here is the link...Poor, hungry and ready to vote in Ohio -- chicagotribune.com

The story couldn't help but conjure up images of citizens of the USSR waiting in long lines for food.

Your thoughts?.....

When I think about "food lines" - I imagine a group of people standing in a line waiting for food. Not:

Quote:
Twice a month, every month, cars line up to get a box of food from the wooden pallets
And the next quote kind of made me sick to my stomache. These people get free food... and then have the nerve to say this:

Quote:
"It's really kind of embarrassing," DeVol said. "It's not much to get after waiting in line for five hours."
He's complaining about free food. FREE Food. Disgusting, really.

if they are on a food line they may not have money to move. last time I checked it wasn't free to break a lease, get a u-haul, pay deposit on new place, pay utilities, have first and last months rent, deposit money and the list goes on and on. Moving is never easy under taking and anyone who talks like it is must be young or have not done much in life as far as moving is concerned.

Default Reality

The reality is if most people are working and the dollar is worth less then it's worth you have false inflation that the government is trying to manage. With Gas prices at 3 and 4 dollars a gallon soon. I have a solution remove all tax from gas. That will lower the price and bring some relief. Move out of the middle east and watch prices of energy drop by 60%. I blame the FED, corporate bail outs and printing money and 9 trillion dollars of debt for the situtution. Most importantly no republican and democrat running for office in 2008 except maybe Ron Paul would have solved these issues. But now we are stuck with more central planning big government republicans and democrats. If you steal from me to give to others doesn't fix anything. I have a home to heat and kids to feed too. Maybe we should stop looking to the government to solve everything and remove these taxes on all the people. Get our economy running and get rid of the FED, and put some real small government people in congress.

PS the closer we have moved to socialism is the closer you get to USSR communism. Dependance on government only causes problems and the bigger the government the more taxes and money out of your pocket.

Many of them have cars, maybe they could drive a little longer? they're only 50 miles from Columbus, pop of over 770,00. They may even have a couple jobs. Just a crazy idea.

This scenario has been going on for years -- working poor having to choose between taking their kid to the doctor or buying food, etc. Food donations are way down and more people are losing their jobs, especially in rural areas like Logan.

Did you read the story? Sixty percent coming to the food pantry are senior citizens; the rest are recently laid off or are already working.

And did you read the story? The person running the pantry is embarrassed. He's not complaining; rather, he's empathetic to those who wait for food, and they're not getting enough to last them the week.

Good grief. Would you rather people got frostbite while standing in line? Or that they throw their back out or injure their knees lugging their groceries home?

Sorry I don't feel more remorse for people sitting in their vehicles for five hours rather than working for five hours. Just seems redundant and utter waste of time.

Again, not to sound demonic, but I don't really feel sorry for senior citizens in this position. My grandmother is a senior citizen - she's not requiring food banks to feed her. She's not even retired and is a great-grand mother. She understands that she would not be able to maintain her lifestyle without working.

Yes, I read the article. Never stated that he was complaining about receiving free food - just complaining about free food. What I find embarassing is all these people that seemingly have to "shift through" food to pick out what they want.

When I hit an extremely rough patch, I lived off of $.10 Ramen. Did it for almost a year. So, instead of sitting with my car on for 5 hours wasting $3/gallon gas - I worked and ate ramen. Worked out quite nicely.

I seriously wonder what the monetary difference would be if these people just went and bought food rather than use their gas to drive to this location and sit in line for free food. Almost makes as much sense as driving 10-15 miles out of the way for gas that is a few cents cheaper.

And to further my evil rant about these people... I think a little humility to have them stand out in the cold huddled up might serve a purpose to have them do whatever it takes to NOT be there.

^^ You should vote on my "Do you dislike poor people" poll if you have not already, I need more votes to get an accurate picture of the world and you certainly seem to have an opinion.
