When both manufacturers are competing on an even playing field you have a point. Chinese manufacturers are operating with state sanctioned subsidies/monopolistic practices. There is lack of labor laws, lack of environmental laws*, IP theft and other things like holding up shipment of food at the dock so it rots.

*You are liberal, yes? It is highly hypocritical tom to expect US industries to have to operate within the labor and environmental laws here and then support Chinese companies stomping all over workers rights and pollution the environment to the degree they do. How can you possibly coalesce those two positions?

Please be serious!

Obama ran with a slogan of "Forward." He set us backward in many areas. Now Trump is reversing the trend and making us competitive once again. There is no reason why we should accept the premise that we cannot compete with foreign imports.

It is now possible that 80% of your residential solar system is paid with incentives!

80% paid for by someone else and they still can't sell them at profit even with the tariff?

Which is why the US is falling behind other countries. We are obsessed with protecting a dying industry and outdated fuel source like coal while the rest of the world kicks our butt in the development of new technology that will be used going forward. Clinging to some romanticized version of America's past is holding us back bigtime.

No matter how many American's insist that we try to hold back time and halt progress, the move away from fossil fuels will happen with or without the US. We are ceding our leadership position to other countries for silly partisan political gains and to payoff donors like the Kochs.

A decade ago there was an emerging solar manufacturing industry in this country bolstered by massive subsidies. Those massive subsidies are now effectively subsidizing Chinese manufactures. The loss of this industry because of unfair trade practices came under Obama's watch.

If the Chinese are playing 'unfair' in this market - then this looks like a good idea.
It's a warning shot.

Not it isn't, it's $1500 additional using 300 watt panels priced at $1/watt which is actually on the low side.

Meanwhile the installer is bending you over backwards charging obscene lease and loan fees, because you're too stupid to buy the system outright.
That's got nothing to do with the conversation.

There are individual things Trump does I can support but he is dead wrong on trade. Free trade, while there are some losers, is a slam dunk net positive for all involved.
