The U.S. is only one member of NATO. Besides when did the U.S. ever come to the defense of Canada.

Don't hold your breath while waiting for facts in support of that meme.

Nah, not only do I stick by what I say, I will add to it. It is not just the size of the population but a combination of the size and wealth of the population that makes the USA such a prize market for foreign nations. For various reasons, including intensive lobbying of politicians by multi-national corporations, the United States government gave access to the huge American economy for free.

And they did this despite years of mounting evidence that it was a bad idea.

You can see from the map that the majority of nations have trade deficits. Most of the trade surplus his going to mercantilist East Asia or parts of Europe. In contrast, most of the Americas and Africa are falling behind. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balance_of_trade

The situation is even worse when you realize that some of the green countries (those with trade surpluses) are actually only in the surplus because they are oil producers.

You can see that those countries that follow the free trade openly (without government interference or support) tend to have the biggest deficits, such as the Anglo and Latin countries and basically all of North and South America (except for oil producing Venezuela). Those that support their own industries, either openly or with tariffs, hidden trade barriers, or undervalued currencies - tend to have the highest surpluses.

Something has to change, America and Canada for that matter, have gone too far in history to want to go back to colonial nation status.

The top import origins are the United States ($266B), China ($27.3B), Germany ($10.6B), Mexico ($10.4B) and Japan ($8.16B).

Now do you really think they are going to throw $266B away as we can get many of the items from other countries or produce them ourselfs.

Trump's tariff threats could not have worked better for China and Russia if they had written them themselves.

Tariffs and threats of tariffs isolate the US the way we have isolated Russia. Trump has repeatedly attacked our allies and the leaders of our allied nations. Trump verbally attacked and disparaged NATO, NAFTA, TPP Germany, UK, FRA ,CHINA and on and on.
Trump is either a fool a russian spy or both, because he is pushing our allies away from us and into the Arms of China and to a lesser extent Russia.

I see Right wingers pretending Trump's attacks on our allies are somehow good, yet not one of you can provide a reason as to why this is good.
We have yet to see any of Trump's attacks yield a win for the US, yet the right wing mindlessly cheers him on.

NAFTA talks have turned out to have gotten us zero, Abandoning TPP has left the USA without the intended alliance that would have forced China to the table . (remember folks that was the whole point, 12
pacific rim nations in a club that would have the power to force China to make fair deals)

Trump loves the showmanship, he loves the stage and being in the spotlight, but he has clearly lost decades of goodwill , he has given up bargaining chips , he has distanced allies and we have gained exactly ZERO.

That's the thing I don't understand.

While the tariffs will have a temporary boost for a handful of steel corporations it is going to severely and adversely impact hundreds of small, medium and large businesses in the USA raising their costs, their profitability and ultimately the costs to the consumers.

Why would they? They point of a tariff is to increase domestic demand, except the US can't compete. So all the tariff is doing is making US business pay at least 10% more for a product they have to have. Boeing, GM and Ford aren't suddenly going to change their supply chain, so all the costs get passed on to the US consumer, and Canada makes more money.

MAGA!
