Gun owners have no responsibility for how their stolen property is used. Neither does anyone else in regards to stolen property. Even Home Depot has no responsibility for how their legally leased property is used.

I know that. Irrelevant to the question asked, which was "should" the father be liable, not "is".

Which invites opinion as a response. Get it?

Should you be liable for kid snagging the car keys without permission and running someone over?

Wrong. Home Depot could be held liable if they had knowledge that they were renting to a person who would commit mass murder. Just like they could be held liable to renting to a person who was noticeably drunk.

Chances are Home Depot would be found liable in a similar situation of negligence where a gun owner would not.

It seems that the majority of Texans accept these shootings as a fair exchange for their 2nd amendment rights. Most likely, there'll be two or three mass shootings in Texas schools before the close of 2018 and life will go on. Tomorrow, the Royal Wedding will push this story to the back of the pile, so we'll all have to wait a few weeks to have this debate all over again! But for now, we can all go back to looking at our cell phones and computers for the next titillating news story. Stay Tuned!

Do parents have responsibility for their children?

If Dad had given hm alcohol and the kid had killed someone drinking and driving, Dad would be liable.

Maybe if we make gun owners responsible for securing their weapons then we won't fight so hard to take them away from gun owners.
Sensible gun control should be equal to owning a car :
1#: Gun registration with the Government
#2: Gun owners should have to pay liability insurance
#3: Pay a yearly fee to own & carry a gun just like you do to own a car
