Starting today, a plastic straw ban goes into effect in the city of Seattle. The reason given for the ban is that the plastic straws end up in the oceans, and can harm sea-life.
I've seen it suggested that plastic syringe bodies can be formed into a workable replacement for straws. They are available free from the County Public Health Dept. at various locations around the city. I'm told that you just walk in, scoop up about a half-dozen of them, and you're set for weeks. If you're a fan of the milk shakes at iconic Dick's Drive In, it's worth a try. https://www.kingcounty.gov/depts/hea...-exchange.aspx
There is a thriving public health industry to service the needs of heroin users here, which is not going to be shut down by Greenpeace anytime soon. This does generate tons of outdoor litter, in the form of both needles and syringes, but somehow this does not seem to harm the fishies like the straws do. I've never seen plastic straws in the ocean but, I have seen syringes. Back in the 80's a barge dumped medical waste into the Atlantic near NY/NJ resulting in tampon applicators and syringes washing back into shore. The beaches in Sandy Hook were covered with them.
