Lobbying for Pro-Russia groups inside Ukraine that wanted Ukraine to become part of Russia. Context is important.

Many of the charges against Manafort and Gates, which include money laundering and tax fraud, relate to alleged crimes that predate either of the political operatives joining the Trump campaign. They primarily involve the concealment of millions of dollars they made while working on behalf of a pro-Putin political party in Ukraine.

It's absolutely true. Where did you get your information about this? Try additional sources, and educate yourself about what occurred in Ukraine during the winter of 2013-2014 and the following spring. Note the names involved. Then check who Manafort worked with and for in Ukraine. Same names, and it's no coincidence.

Manafort is over a barrel, given Putin and his cronies' fondness for assassination and "accidental" deaths of those who "betray" them...Manafort may not care about his own safety (may not - I think he's narcissistic enough to care a great deal) but he has a family to consider. Though he hasn't been very considerate of them previously, from all evidence. So I think Manafort is highly unlikely to cooperate any more and instead may welcome imprisonment, if his safety can be guaranteed, and his family may be offered additional protection: perhaps a move and change of identity. Or he may offer a tidbit or two, in return for his family's protection.
I wouldn't be sipping any tea just now, if I were Manafort or a member of his family.
