It's been like this in Illinois for 15 years. I still remember walking into a Walgreens before they required I.D. to buy Sudafed and seeing a guy buying 20 packs of the stuff. I remember thinking to myself, "why would anyone need so much Sudafed", and shortly thereafter there were meth rings in the news being broken up and arrested. It took about 5 years but they eventually busted everyone who manufactured meth.
Now the stuff is much more potent coming in from Mexico anyway.

Busting meth labs is still common in some areas. Farmers here are continually getting fertilizer stolen because it can be used for meth.
OP needs to get out of Detroit a little more often. Here in AZ, Wally World has their self-check registers programmed to require an employee to approve purchase of anything like spray paint and Lort knows what else. Last time I bought Sudafed was in Florida a number of years ago, and yes it was behind the counter and I was asked for id. It goes into a data base that prevents you from going to 10 different drug stores in one day to stock up
It is not a problem to buy a box of these products for people just wanting to clear their sinuses out.
But if someone clears out the shelves of these products from 12 different pharmacies or whatever, that is likely to trigger an investigation by either the police, the FBI, the DEA, or somebody. This is what the ID is required for.
It's the 'D' in the Claritin you bought that resulted in you having to show your driver's license. It's been like this for years. They say it's reduced the amount of meth labs in the country. I just shake my head because if it's not meth it will be something else - and since our government allows drugs to come into the country, they have oversized cajones pretending they care when I get to the cash register.
