In the mid-19th century, this kind of polarization resulted in the Civil War, but as there are now a great many extreme liberals and extreme conservatives in almost every area of the U.S. (with some notable exceptions, I think), how do you think this will eventually resolve?
1. That the liberals or extreme liberals will prevail
2. That the conservatives or extreme conservatives will prevail
3. That people will eventually learn to live mostly in harmony with each other after some kind of "give" on both sides
4. That things will continue as they are indefinitely, with extremists on both sides continuing to strongly dislike (or even hate) those who disagree with them on some issues
5. Other?
Also, do you think that there will be an increase in both the frequency and intensity of violent confrontations between extremists (of either or both parties), or not?
(Just looking for immediate "off the cuff" opinions here, which is why I did not post this in Great Debates.)
I have been reading lots of books on the 19th century....and the hate on both sides was much, much worse than today. It was about SLAVERY, and people that cared....cared very deeply about the issue. One side on the moral end....and the other on the economic end. Howver, most Americans just wanted to avoid the whole mess.
That division continued after the Civil War....you can argue that we have only "started" to move past it in 1964.
I am not sure that the divisions today are a passionate as SLAVERY.
Looking at it from a western perspective...not sure how this pertains to the east coast or mid-west.
The divide in this country is not liberal/conservative. It is really urban/non-urban.
There is a sense of detachment from reality in our urban areas. For example, Seattle area gets a large proportion of their electricity from coal fired plants a thousand miles away in eastern Montana. They are shutting down the coal plant......where do they think their power is going to come from in a few short years??
The city of Los Angeles boycotted the state of Arizona and said they would refuse to do any further business with them. Arizona asked if that meant that Arizona could stop shipping electricity to Los Angeles. The city of Los Angeles actually had to threaten a lawsuit to keep Arizona from shutting off their electricity!!
At some point, the areas outside the "blue cities" will have had enough and at that point I suspect the "blue cities" will have to sue for peace. The "blue cities" are NOT sustainable communities, without the food, water, and energy inputs from rural areas.
It is a lot of silliness these days, basically since so many urban residents have no CLUE about how things work.
MY GUESS, is the wealth in urban areas is based on the rule of law. When that falls apart, they will have a rude awakening.
Hopefully, we will not be that "snowball heading for hell" for long.
When the lights go out in Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles......common sense will come back into fashion....I hope.
Millennials and Gen Z are less dogmatic about social issues than the baby boomers. They don't see abortion and gay marriage as hills to die on. They don't have any issues with legalizing marijuana. They aren't interested in living in a "Christian nation." They grew up in families more like the Simpsons and less like the Waltons. Even those who do lean conservative on social issues are less dogmatic about it than baby boomers. Many right-leaning young people are libertarian on social issues and could care less about religion. I think if we can make it another 15-20 years to see the generational shift from baby boomers to Millennials/Gen X, we might be able to see some progress towards finding some real solutions to our problems. However, that's a big if.
That's not to say there aren't young people with a more boomer-like attitude on those issues, it's just they are a minority.

Eventually the liberals get enough illegals in our country. Then they give them citizenship. Then the Republicans never win another election. Then we go straight to socialism!

How will it end? As long as we call ourselves American first and Democrat / Republican / Whatever later we will do just fine. But if we continue to lose sight of this great country of ours and slip in to pettiness, finger-pointing and blame-game then we are done.
The question should not have been, "How do you think it will end, but when will either side throw the first bomb?
By that I mean, someone is going to be on the short end of a long rifle.
I absolutely believe someone in politics is going to die, and soon, at the hands of an assassin, or group of assassins.
We are nearing the boiling point, and soon it is going to result in someone's death.
It only takes one disgruntled wacko to ice someone, if he/she is fed up with the way politics is going.
I really think we are close to that point presently.
Bob.
