Polarization is always the result of extreme inequality and oligarchy. The oligarchs own the airwaves and are happy to polarize the masses in order to distract them. Its how they've always ruled. They are not interested in changing this.
I’m going with #1 because of the vast control liberalism and the left have over our culture, education system, media, entertainment and social media. Most democrat voters have no idea how anti American and traitorous their party has actually become.
I don’t think the Republicans are nearly as corrupted as the democrats, but the republicans (excluding the few in the Freedom Caucus) suffer from being cowards and too weak to stand up and fight the liberal fascism and anarchy prevailing in our country. Electing Trump was a last ditch effort by voters to try to even the score with a bully who can stand up to the vicious left.
The 2020 election will be the answer to which direction most Americans want us heading toward.
In the mid-19th century, this kind of polarization resulted in the Civil War, but as there are now a great many extreme liberals and extreme conservatives in almost every area of the U.S. (with some notable exceptions, I think), how do you think this will eventually resolve?
1. That the liberals or extreme liberals will prevail
2. That the conservatives or extreme conservatives will prevail
3. That people will eventually learn to live mostly in harmony with each other after some kind of "give" on both sides
4. That things will continue as they are indefinitely, with extremists on both sides continuing to strongly dislike (or even hate) those who disagree with them on some issues
5. Other?
Also, do you think that there will be an increase in both the frequency and intensity of violent confrontations between extremists (of either or both parties), or not?
(Just looking for immediate "off the cuff" opinions here, which is why I did not post this in Great Debates.)
Other. The liberal/conservative divide is mostly fake. We're really being controlled by corporate interests. A lot of the polarization we're seeing right now is a pushback against this.
^^^^This. Until people's little comfort bubbles are burst there will be no movement to do anything meaningful. Our society is prosperous, most people have not only their basic needs met, but are now accustomed and feel entitled to a lot of what used to be considered luxury items. We have it too good to put it all at risk.
However, if the SJW, PC culture and their MEDIA doesn't back off, and Antifa, and BLM don't stop the attacks, then there will be societal backlash.
So, seriously, how do you think this current political/social divide in the U.S. will end?
It is a broken nation, and Trump is working hard to make the division worse. His governing style depends on playing people against each other.
Unfortunately only disasters like wars (not civil war) and massive natural disasters can heal nations which are so badly divided.
